"Suppletive" comparatives
I'm looking for examples of languages which force the use of different adjectives for compared qualities in comparative constructions. There's a list of "suppletive" comparatives here: http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-490.html This is quite useful; however, what I'm really looking for are exampl...

Re: The Exercise and Health thread
I do daily morning exercises for abs and stuff, and lift weights - really really light ones, but it does feel good, and I can take them anywhere. I also go hiking as many times as I possibly can, 1-2 times per week while I'm in Slovenia, and maybe once per fortnight in Scotland (although it's indefi...

Re: The coping thread
Books, climbing (difficult) mountains, and green tea. If that doesn't work, texting ~3 people I feel I can talk to, and then dumping my troubles on them. It usually doesn't even get to that point though since I'm usually through with my crisis by the time I'm able to meet them, but just the prospect...

Re: Learning curve: (dis)similar languages
Funny, I was going to post the exact same thing but didn't have time. Now when I try to speak French, the instant I can't recall a French word, the Japanese one tries to jump in. My brain also only has two slots, it seems. Ditto. When I started learning Japanese, Japanese took over my Foreign slot ...

Re: Quick case terminology question
Although proculessive sounds quite cool, I think I'll stick with abessive for now.
(If anyone's interested, I'm using this for a protolang particle that may become an actual morphological case in a couple of the daughter languages.)

Re: Learning curve: (dis)similar languages
I also don't know about that #2. I can at least say from experience that total dissimilarity is no bar to major confusion. Learning German for four years went great in high school; then I took Japanese for one year in college and it totally destroyed my German. Suddenly I was pronouncing German wor...

Quick case terminology question
How should I call a specialized locative case that marks distance from the marked noun? E.g.
house-CASE
"far from the house"
?

I didn't use to like this song, but I heard it last night at the party we had for the end of the semester at our teacher's flat and... oh my god. Once you understand the lyrics, it becomes like 100x more beautiful!

Re: Creativity of the day
On the topic of real-life passports, I vaguely remember seeing a page or two of the Slovene passport (actually, here , but I don't know if that's the most recent version), and it's definitely pretty and different. As a random question, though, is there a functional difference between "Slovene" and ...

Re: What are you playing?
I've been playing some Grand Theft Auto 2, since it's free (on rockstar's site). Not sure what the big deal is about this series. I thought the missions are pretty frustrating, especially the darn Yakuza "steal the swat van" mission. :P There's quite a difference between GTA2 and GTA3! GTA and GTA2...

(On the other hand, the German one is, indeed, quite boring .) I definitely agree - the Slovene one has a pretty interesting collection of "national artefacts", such as a classical statue of Europa and a set of runes used for identifying the ownership of cheese wheels, using several different color...

First dream I've actually had in quite a while, and it was quite clear, so felt like I needed to share it. Excellent! I find the noun incorporation type section especially useful
Haven't read through all the case studies yet, but I will soon. Having the necessary information gathered together in one place like this makes trying to make a polysynth conlang much less intimidating!

Remains to be seen whether this is just normal "Saul Bellow funny" or "funny f...

I know Latin and Arabic, and can manage Greek and Cyrillic in most of its varieties (although reading Russian causes me... problems). Pretty poor, but that's that.
