I am studying (Brazilian) Portuguese right now, and the subjunctive is causing me quite a lot of headache, as often I just don't see why it is used at all. The past subjunctive is the least problematic, because it seems to be used similarly to what I was taught in Spanish: Se tivesse dinheiro, comp...

No, the link to the pdf file is broken. The same problem occurs when I click "writing" on the Uyse7 page. I've tried it from two computers now. Weird. To be clear, do you mean the link "Writing" at the top of this page , which links to this PDF ? It worked for me the first time I visited it and sti...

azul 'blue' => azular (to *bluen?) amarelo 'yellow' => amarelar (to *yellowen?) Neither "bluen" nor "yellowen" are words btw. Use "turn/become blue" and "turn/become yellow" instead. "redden", "blacken", and "whiten" are the "-en" verbs derived from colors. Sure. I guessed that those words did not ...

Portuguese (and, I think, Spanish) seems to prefer circumfixes for derivation from adjectives (not sure how many of this is inherited from Latin), and sometimes nouns: duro 'hard' => endurecer 'to harden' mole 'soft' => amolecer 'to soften' vermelho 'red' => avermelhar 'to redden' cara 'face' (noun)...

Whose Russian am I supposed to use? :| Use the ones I have that don't have a question mark in brackets after them, as I'm fairly certain about those ones. You can choose can choose for the rest. 0 как вы поживаете? I really think this should be "как вы пожелаете" (kak vy poželaete), because that means the exact same thing as the English equivalent (ie. "as you wish"), whereas "как вы поживаете?" means "how are you?". You're right. I had written «как вы пожелайте» - I'll edit the pos...

Just for fun: what I got from the Russian ones, without looking at a dictionary (only looking at the English). Also, iirc, your first language has trilled r's. So you really don't have much room to talk. It doesn't. I didn't learn it as a child, I didn't grow up hearing it, except very occasionally on TV. What was [r] in Portuguese is now [h] in most Brazilian dialects, including mine. I know lots of people...

The best advice for people trying to get their coronal trills down is: it's much easier between low vowels, to begin with, at least. So, practice saying [ara ara ara ara], and make sure you don't retroflex it! If you say so, it may be true for you. But I find it no more difficult to pronounc...

Great! Welsh Lessons!
I think this method, showing a text and vocabulary, is way better. I'm even going to steal it .
I'll be following this thread closely.
