Japanese does something very similar, turning /h/ into /ɸ/ before the rounded high vowel. Although that could represent a retention of earlier /ɸ/ in that context rather than a change into it.ObsequiousNewt wrote:/h/ > /f/ next to a rounded vowel, yes?

Yeah, that is also quite a pain. I always seem to run into the problem of them getting too big because my hand gets tired of drawing tightly or something.Astraios wrote:Trees? Pfft, try drawing tiny neat waves that are all the same size around an entire continent!

Also, your "forest of trees" looked a lot like an ocean inlet given its dark coloration before I read the label and realized that the improbable sea was just north of it.

Yes, what seems so absurd about it is the combination of elements in its entirety, not to mention the flag they purportedly use.

Re: American perceptions of British accents
I must confess that I find it really hard to reliably distinguish various British accents from each other. Even distinguishing the Australian accent from them does not come easily to me. I still cannot decide whether that Geico gecko has an Australian or English accent, or even a South African or Ne...

Re: Are palatals coronal or dorsal?
I think it would depend on the language and the diachronic origin of the palatal series. Some languages may treat them like dorsal stops if they derive from palatalized velars while others might treat them more like coronals if they derive from palatalized alveolars.

Re: Can someone explain the sounds all the diacritics make.
Stress accents (by which I assume you mean acute accent marks) indicate the position of stress, usually on irregularly accented words in languages with otherwise regular accent. The orthography of Spanish illustrates the usage of accent marks particularly well, so you could start by looking at that....

Re: Verb problem
I imagine the language would simply avoid having so many roots distinguished only by the final syllable if grammatical inflection overrides it so pervasively. Roots like that would presumably fall out of use and get replaced with more easily distinguishable ones.
