Re: Transitive vs. Intransitive

My latest language, Xuáli, lacks a difference between nouns and verbs. It is as though all verbs have been replaced by agent nouns. To say "I will kill you" you essentially say "I = future killer-of you". Consequently, transitivity is treated in exactly the same way as a genitive relationship. Trans...

"I called you" does not mean "I called you and successfully contacted you". "I was going to call you" means you didn't attempt this.

I don't look White American, I look quite Mediterranean/Middle Eastern, hence I'm "ethnic" by Murrican standards. The worst credit I ever saw for someone in a movie was "Ethnic girl". I don't remember what movie it was. The Westminster is warped because apparently that's how iPhones make panoramic ...

what do you mean by "inferred ergative"? sounds very unclear. Really, in most ergative languages that permit similar gas in coordintion, it's the man that leaves, even though he isn't overtly absolutive anywhere. Since your question is unclearly stated, I cannot really answer whether you're mislead...

Re: Case instead of voice

Actually, what surprises typologists and researchers wrt ergative languages is that in most of them, it's still the man that leaves. The number of ergative languages that have an absolutive pivot are vanishingly few, and most actually have an underlying nominative pivot. Would that mean the second ...

It's a bit like the time that I went to the cinema with my sister and the guy behind the bar obviously thought she was my girlfriend... Ugh, that's happened to me. She's 12 years older than me!!! The Semantic Drift Thread

This thread is for anyone who's doing diachronics and not quite sure what to do with semantic drift. Basically, anyone like me. I'm having fun with sound changes and grammatical changes, but semantic changes are a bit more difficult for me. I've come up with a few changes that I'm happy with (for ex...
