Matt: I hereby petition the Voom to refer to Eddy as "Eddy the Mango" until such a time when he'll just shut up about that topic, or get off his bum and try to draw some good stuff, whichever comes first.

Now I just need to find a treasonous ZBB quote.

Trebor: actually a mixed language not only borrows boatloads of vocabulary, but also borrows boatloads of morphology. Pidgins and creoles tend not to borrow morphology from any of their source languages.

"We love you; your wife is great.
Here's a frog; let's celebrate!"

Now just replace "frog" with......

Grammatical categories are a somewhat artificial concept; we don't "know" right from the beginning that there are such things as "nouns" and "verbs", we know these things because we learnt them from linguists. So it's not very natural for one to be "conscious" of word classes. My guess is, if a soun...

Mercator : Well, every language incorporates loan words, and I don't see loan words going into English faster than they go into, say, Chinese. If you ask me to choose an international language, I'll favour a pidgin such as Chinook Jargon. I'm not sure about ease of access to information, but I pref...

Legros : That's a good point. Japanese anime is in fashion all over the world, even though not everyone understands Japanese. Perhaps the status of English as a lingua franca is a symptom, rather than the cause, of the Westernization of the world. An argument for linguistic diversity that's often b...
