Candl 0.1
Code here: https://bitbucket.org/xvedejas/candl The Candl (Conlangs and Languages) tool is for those wanting to automate complex language morphological and phonetic rules. It uses regular expressions extensively to define these rules. This tool is not very user-friendly at the moment, but I invite o...

Re: CCC map voting - THRU JAN 30
Do we only get one choice? Then I vote for Lyhoko Leaci.
But seriously it would be nice to be able to rank them (and then do some condorcet method)

Conscript with example
Continuing my tradition of making one conscript every couple of years. I could say something like "it is designed to be carved into wood or written with a brush", but honestly I just wanted to make something that looked cool. The example says "Jas solejann mozatik, toze vistiket" which is (mostly?) ...

No, that isn't what he's saying. It started in July, it's now November. That is a fair amount of time ago however you look at it. It was last posted in very recently, though. And still on the first page of C&C. But I digress. I started a tool in python for conlangers where you define a bunch of thi...

Eleven twelfths
[ʟ̩ˈlɛvɨn twɛʟfs]
Fifth
[fɪθ]
Five sixths
[fɑiv sɪksθ]
I can't really do [kθs] reliably, so I say Sixths as Sixth.

I haven't really posted with any frequency in the last 2-3 years so it's irrelevant anyway, I think.finlay wrote:who are you and how do you have >3000 posts and i still have to ask that question? did you use to be someone else?

That's really all you need to know. God forbid we get to know you a little better. In due time. I don't know how much time I'll spend on this board in the future, so I'd rather that determine how much you get to know me rather than a single post would could end up being unnecessary. If you have any...

Re: Conlanging Software Wish List
So, I've actually implemented a lot of these things at least partially, but I don't have time to release/maintain anything right now. Maybe if I get some help I'll make a webapp (I don't know web development at all).

Does altitude affect the way language is spoken?
http://phys.org/news/2013-06-altitude-affect-language-spoken.html This actually seems plausible to me — could someone with more formal linguistic knowledge speak to whether this seems like a reasonable conclusion? I wonder if we'll begin to see other correlations with geography, though I think altit...

Re: Phonoaesthetics
My own aesthetic sense is quite different from that of Tolkien's, so it's certainly not universal even if common to prefer soft phones. Phones I quite like: (x-sampa) k m v z x E Phones I dislike: b p w u 2 h I'm not sure what the pattern here is, if there is any. I do tend to really like voiced fri...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
I've noticed in American English, and in my idiolect, /θ/ and /ð/ often are [t̪] at the beginnings of words in informal speech. It's never aspirated or voiced so far as I can tell. Can anyone confirm?

or, you could, you know, install a lock on the door ? That gauges close to 0 on the nerdiness scale. Well, yeah, but it's way cheaper and much more likely to work I think this is pretty likely to work. There's already a combination lock thing on the door, but for various reasons I want to let my fr...

Re: Creativity of the day
I designed a mount to put over the inside locking mechanism of my dorm room door. It will be fastened using existing screwholds so that I don't need to modify the door or anything. It will hold a servo and an arduino over the lock so that I can open the door from the inside. On the outside of the do...

Re: Thinking about teaching a class on Linguistics
As for the mathier side of things, I do have a decent grounding in set theory, but I really don't know enough about the subject to teach it. I'd prefer to teach the class as sort of a sampler of topics in descriptive linguistics. So yes, I'll talk about phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, etc;...

Re: Thinking about teaching a class on Linguistics
Remember, not all college students are nerds like us. I go to Caltech. Everyone at this point (yes even freshmen) will have, for example, two terms of proof-intensive mathematics. Those who choose my class would be self-selecting and probably very unhappy if it wasn't technically rigorous. Also, do...

Re: Thinking about teaching a class on Linguistics
I think Describing Morphosyntax might be a bit hard-going for an introductory class. Be prepared for people to not actually know what linguistics is , despite taking the class. During my linguistics degree, there were still some people a month in who were confusing the words grammar and vocabulary ...

Thinking about teaching a class on Linguistics
So, at my university we can teach classes and get paid for this. I was thinking about teaching an introductory class on linguistics, mostly from the perspective of Describing Morphosyntax (with a bit of phonetics thrown in). I believe that I would be teaching 20 one-hour lectures over the course of ...
