Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

Actually, I apparently have *still* been getting it wrong all this time. "upholster" is not a compound of "up" + "holster", and it apparently has a short o (/ɔ~ɒ~ɑ/ depending on dialect). That means either Ive never heard the word spoken out loud in my life, or there are other people getting it wro...

Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

In short, if I'd been reading the name, I would've said /ˌloːsˈgatoːz/, but instead I imitated his /ˌlasˈgætoːz/. I can understand the pronunciation of "Los", esp. given "Los Angeles", but /ˈgætoːz/ makes my teeth curl a bit. Oh. But with t-flapping it's probably something like [ˈgæɾoʊz]. "gaddows"...

Re: Help your conlang fluency

"Modify" probably isn't the best word to use here, but an entire adpositional phrase can itself "refer to" either a noun or a verb / whole sentence. Thanks for the clarification. However, I think that in traditional linguistics, in both cases "on the horse" is described as a PP, and in both cases "...

Re: Help your conlang fluency

I thought I had some examples of languages (Semitic ones) where adpositions could only modify verbs, i.e. are adverbial, rather than being attributive, i.e. modifying nouns, but I am from looking back not quite as certain about this, so I will omit those examples. I have a bit of a problem with you...

does anyone here go at it and say "right, I'm going to do the colours!" and then make words for as many colours as you're likely to need or can think of, and then say "next - plants!" and do the same? I've long suspected that Polish should be spoken while (mildly) drunk. I'll try to make another recording soon, while sober.

It might be interesting to try this with a non-English elicitation text.
