CLAT question curiosity
Looking through Oxford's Classics Languages Aptitude Test from 2015, I'm annoyed by section C. Maybe I'm being thick but I feel that whether to parse this as an adjective or preposition is a contested issue and a stupid question: In the usage of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, the phrase...

Re: A science fiction setting.
why does no scifi author consider the effects of island dwarfism on a global scale? Well, in my case, the conditions for island dwarfism don't apply. The space habitat population are insular, in a sense, but they are neither isolated nor lacking in resources. Plus, I think insular dwarfism require ...

Re: Explaining Writing Systems Thread
That's quite a sweet explanation; might as well just leave it to omniglot.com etc though.
Make a thread for explaining conscripts in the other forum if you like; people don't talk about the histories of their conscripts enough I reckon

Re: Lowan: A Germanic conlang
First, how long did paganism linger in the Lowan population? Did it survive at all as superstition alongside Christianity? Was there ever a period of "fond remembrance" sort of like with Iceland and it's views of paganism post-conversion, when a lot of the Eddas were written? Yeah, this is what I w...

Re: Accusative and Definiteness
I think the Persian accusative marker -rā also may only appear with a definite direct object. Persian has a marker, -i , for non-specific indefinite direct objects, while specific indefinite direct objects (e.g. 'I took a certain bowl') take both -rā and -i . Definiteness is not morphologically mark...

You really have the oddest accent in English I think I've ever come across though - like you've incorporated features from about ten different dialects as you ...

This reminds me of a Brazilian article I read, about a young Indian who's taken to see a city for the first time. He gazes around at the huge buildings, seemingly not very impressed, and finally asks "Where is the mandiocal ?"-- the place where manioc is pounded? Our species has (on a historical sc...

As for gods or God, I like Neil Gaiman's observation: the universe rewards belief systems. Believe in omnipotent teddy bears, and you'll soon start finding evidence for omnipotent teddy bears. Off topic. But I could be said to believe in omniscient and omnipresent teddy bears. Or at least, I have g...

*goes off to do some research into Cantonese and Mandarin grammar and phonology* *smacks hand away* Do you want to learn Cantonese, or learn about Cantonese? You're going to use it to be understood, not to write an interesting paper, surely? You want pronunciation, not phonology; and vocabulary, no...

I suppose in the case of a velar+(anything) coarticulated plosive like this the anterior plosive would be produced via a velaric ingressive mechanism, like clicks. (AFAIK/can work out). By extension, the anterior plosive of a labial+dental 'implosive' would work on a dental ingressive airflow, which...

So, the focus of "thoil" is not on the worth of the purchased item but on my feeling after purchasing the item or my need for that item? So its meaning is more like "I can't justify the purchase of it for myself"? Yes - exactly. It's whetehr you could justify it to yourself and not feel too guilty ...
