Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Recently when I was talking to a ...

Re: Questions about Japanese

I don’t know anything about Japanese, but it looks like you’re conflating historical morphology with modern still-productive morphology. If ochiru ’s modern causative is ochisaseru , but its ancient causative (/transitive) counterpart came out in modern Japanese as otosu , then you aren’t deriving ...

Re: Venting thread

you have to tell every doctor you go to here your entire medical history because they don't have any kind of centralized system, it's tiring. they get you to fill out a standardized form and they often don't read it properly. good thing is you can just go to another doctor... and hope they're actual...

do you... pronounce the L in polka? is it not /po:kə/ dots?

also i definitely have long O in bolt, troll, etc, but it's easier to tell in a scottish accent. if you're writing long O as /əʊ/ i have real trouble pronouncing [əʊɫ], like is that how you'd pronounce it?

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

I would say it's a register difference, at least in the UK. You'd be looked down on somewhat for using glottal stops in court, but probably not in the office because offices aren't that formal. It's less noticeable at the end of a word, though. Words like "bottle" vary in register from lower [bɔʔʊu̯...

On a similar note I always get thrown by the title of another thread here, "Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlearn" because "have" /hav/ and "have to" /haftə/ are totally different mental lexical entries for me, so I always start thinking it's something I possess instead of somet...

I think there are a few people who have or have contemplated having languages with lirlat the root word for laughing.

As for my ones... suika is my word for train. Can't think of any more. I don't do this very often I guess.

Do you distinguish /ɛr ɪr ʌr/ where /r/ falls in a coda position? (I was watching Shetland and the characters did that, most notably consistently pronouncing person with an [ɛr].) Thank you for all the answers. However, in my onbin question, I wasn't asking about the actual processes. Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

One of my least favourite things about Japanese, and about teaching English to Japanese speakers, is that they've borrowed these words as if they have strong stress on the second syllable, like /gaˈreidʒ/ and /meˈseidʒ/ (it's then passing through the filter of Japanese phonotactics and coming out as...
