Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

Let me apologize for the hiatus. This is the first time in the last couple days I've had the chance to logon to my computer. First things first: Oh, and to DBoozer, whom I've never met before: hi! Hi! :-) I felt Guitarplayer, Jashan and WeepingElf all brought up extremely important points and their ...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

A mother is a mother by virtue of giving birth. She would still be a mother if she gave the child up for adoption and never saw the child again. A conlanger is more like a chef in that a chef is constantly perfecting his or her technique, engaged in learning more about their chosen art/craft as tim...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

Okay, how about "She made up a language, but she's not a conlanger" "She wrote a book she but she's not an author." "She had a child but she's not a mother." "She murdered a guy but she's not a murderer." "She directed a film but she's not a director." Yes, I could see someone saying "She wrote a b...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

tl; dr The sooner you get into the attitude of "We are a conlanging organization and want to have good relations with other conlanging organizations", rather than "We are the conlanging organization and we represent all conlangers", the better. Good advice. Do you have any specific suggestions on h...

Okay, how about "She made up a language, but she's not a conlanger" or do you disagree with the rest of the definition as well? "baaaaaahahaha" doesn't really give me much to go on for a response.

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

On your advisory committee: 1. You want people who approve of the LCS and want to help it... but who don't want to be members Yes, it was felt that this would open it up to the widest possible field of those interested without asking for dues. 2. You want input on what the LCS should be doing, as l...

And PLEASE, and I say this as a Mod, not just as an interlocutor, don't do that ridiculous thing with the page of sequential replies again. It does nothing but inconvenience everybody. This isn't USENET. The world has moved on. I know we're all geeks, but that doesn't mean we have to act like nerds...

As it is, subsequent interviews were used not only to answer questions about David himself and Dothraki but also the larger community, for example: http://www.wired.com/geekdad/2010/08/a-game-of-thrones-david-j-peterson/#ixzz0xlaPMw00 http://www.tor.com/component/content/blog/59109 I didn't elect D...

* to bring together all varieties of conlanging without bias, tie together the conlanging communities (including but not limited to artistic languages, auxiliary languages, engineered languages, interlinguas, etc), Why are we meant to want to be 'tied', and who elected you to tie us? Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

From my perspective, that's the primary role of any organization that represents a larger community (see the stamps, trains, and coin reference above): to listen to the members of its constituent community. I wholeheartedly agree. Indeed, that's my point: you do not represent us. You are not an org...

And no, our antipathy didn't begin with Sai - in my case at least, it began with the arrogance of the very name. You couldn't even have the humility to settle for an indefinite article? Or some qualification of any kind? No, you saw the prime territory and squatted all over it. First, just for the ...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

Here is a diagnostic I would propose: hypothetically, if other conlangers were to decide to create their own conlanging-related organization with similar purposes and functions, would the LCS see this as 1, a valuable further benefit to the community? Or as 2, competition? Again, speaking solely fr...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

First, let me say that I am in no way speaking as part of the LCS Board, officers, or any other "official" capacity in this particular post. That's why I didn't use the LCS ZBB account. These are only my personal thoughts on the points that have been brought up. I've personally always seen the LCS's...

Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

Oh, while I'm thinking about it, Don, could you revise your kind references on the LCS site to refer to "Zompist", not "the Zompist"? Happy to do it. To the best of my knowledge, I've now expunged all the preceding definite articles... although I must admit that I tend to agree with Xephyr.... :) I...

I hope your secretary Don Boozer doesn't do too much drinking on the job! Re: LCS Creating New Advisory Committee

I've been trying to sharpen my psychic powers, tell me if I'm right: every member of the society is also a member of that board. Actually, that would be incorrect. The LCS currently has 63 members in 14 countries. Also, I like that the LCS has an Official Account on this forum. So fancy! Just helps...

Sounds like the perfect excuse to get wasted to me. Only if someone writes drinking songs in Lingua Ignota. Or Esperanto, if Lingua Ignota isn't complete enough. Actually, there's a good Hilde's Day activity...Write drinking songs..er, uh..poetry...in your own conlang... or each person at the party...

Holiday for Conlangers

I have been absent from ZBB for far too long . In any case, I return bearing a gift for the conlanging community: a proposal for an ecumenical (artlanger, auxlanger, engelanger) holiday to celebrate the art and craft of language creation every year: St. Hildegard's Day I've written a post at The Con...
