Re: Suraic scratchpad - Diachronica & Phonology
Firstly, can uvulars and uvularized consonants affect non-high vowels, and if so, how? I am planning on reducing the vowel system to /i ɛ ɑ u/ with length distinction and then expanding it again by making allophones of vowels adjacent to the emphatics phonemic. Yes, they can, in the same way as wit...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
Cedh, thanks for explaining those Gezoro sound changes, and for your very plausible suggestions for where other Plateau Western languages might branch off. It'd be interesting to see your input lexicon with stress marked; if this is the only Western language that has unpredictable stress at its ear...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
I have a question about the Proto-Western to Gezoro sound changes: there are a number of changes conditioned by stress, and then some changes to stress assignment in rule 24 toward the end; but no mention of how stress is assigned before that late rule. And looking closely at the rules and some of ...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
The Gezoro grammar page now contains a proper characterisation of the various Late Gezoro dialects , including an overview of their sound changes . And the lexicon now contains dialect forms for all entries (not including semantic changes etc.; this would be a task for whoever wants to flesh out a d...

Let's take a transitive verb such as from dhok's question from almost a decade ago: "My mom gave me milk". If there's a verb milk-give and you can say a thing such as my-mom she-milk-me-gave , is the verb still transitive or does the incorporation turn it intransitive? Could you say something like ...

Re: Relative clauses: cross-linguistic comparison
Apparently, of the languages said to have syntactic ergativity, some indeed seem to have syntactically ergative relative clauses, while others have syntactically accusative relative clauses: [quote=" Heaton et al. 2016, "The Status of Syntactic Ergativity in Kaqchikel", Lingua 170, pp. 35–46 "] [......

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")
The most likely place for a new Isles language would surely be somewhere in the eastern half of the Ttiruku island arc. Ttiruku itself is supposed to be a hotbed of linguistic diversity, but the only language there that we know so far is Pparwak. There could easily be a second branch of Isles there,...

Alternative is, well, good stuff that doesn't hit the top of the charts. Your geekier or artier stuff; played on college radio stations; thinks it's better than mere rock n roll. Well, that was what I assumed before I looked at who 'alternative' actually was. But it turns out, this doesn't really m...

Re: Vowel deletion in adjectives only?
Sound changes can operate across word boundaries within phrases though. If your adjectives are usually placed before nouns, you could have them lose their final vowels through e.g. vowel deletion in (phrase-)medial position immediately before a stressed syllable, if nouns have initial stress. This w...
