Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

BTW Cəssin vowel harmony was originally thought of as having developed under strong areal influence of western Doroh dialects; it would be nice if this idea remains plausible. Yes -- I won't be working directly on Western Doroh but I would expect it to develop a similar harmonic system with back un...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

I'm gonna go ahead and wikify the revised changes soon. But I do like your solution for Doroh, and the allophonic introduction of [ɨ] (which could become phonemic with further changes, if you want). It looks like a nice starting point for developing a vowel+consonant harmony similar to what Cedh did...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

(That we both missed this is evidence in favor of using a sound change applier!) Yeah, I'm gonna start using one. I always did my SCs "manually" because it helps me get a certain gut feeling for how the changes work, but in this case I'm getting overwhelmed by the number of stages I'm trying to kee...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

Thinking about carrying over some PEI roots into Proto-Isthmus. This will involve deciding on a more exact PEI form, of course. Here are some suggestions; the Isthmus meaning may in the end influence what we think the original PEI meaning was. ŋijz - "speak" > PI njijdz-a- "speak", njijdz-u- "is utt...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

I get dārajije though—I think you missed leniting the /dʲ/. Using the alternative causative participle suffix -ajdja , I get either dārajajje or dārajajdze , depending on whether /j/ counts as a vowel for the lenition rule. (And then there's another set of options without the reduplication: dājije,...

It could also be handy for translating certain concepts from Mûtsinamtsys philosophy, e.g.: Mûts. sihtû’a ‘that which causes us to eat’ (F. hitugə ) → PIsth. kijbajdja Mûts. gmatû’a ‘that which causes us to fly’ (F. matugə ) → PIsth. gontajdja Great idea, but Mûtsinamtsys philosophy happens over tw...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

I think the sense of pata may be more "run." the one that might be relevant to you is that the suffix that forms participles in Proto-Isthmus is now -dja ... -di forms a verbal noun which may or may not be productive in Eastern Isthmus. (In Western, the two merge with the dropping of final vowels.) ...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

I like #3 at 0 YP, maybe later progressing to #4. How to decide? Whichever way we carve it up, my descendant is spoken on the big island. Part of the reasoning for that is that the phonology somewhat resembles Affanonic -- whereas if someone works on a Western dialect they might wish to make it more...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

For what it's worth, several years ago I posted some thoughts on the Akana Forum about what Doroh case morphology might look like (near the end of this post) and about retroflexes (here) ; maybe you'll find some inspiration there. Nice. I might run with the idea of as - forming the basis of the obl...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

OK. I'm mainly interested in wikifying what already exists. Might develop it a little further but not a full language description. I was wrong. I find that I am extremely interested in the Doroh language I'm working on. I'm deriving it independently from Proto-Doroh (AKA Early Doroh), and I'm provi...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

1. Cedh: I found an old thread where you were discussing the descendant of Fáralo spoken in Sertek. Did you finalize the sound changes on that? I want to have the correct form for a name I used in the Huyfárah article. It would be the reflex of baoteka-laš "governorate." I never finalized the sound...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

Hmm. Where could barbarians come from at that point in time? The Xōron? Probably not; it has been civilised quite a bit by the Dāiadak, and any invaders from there would have to pass through Lasomo which appears fairly strong at this moment. I was thinking of the Damak, a pencilled-in people we kno...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

http://akana.conlang.org/wiki/Huyf%C3%A1rah#History Two new sections on Fáralo history. I've advanced it now into the early 1000s. There's some time to fill before Wippwo emerges from the muck, and I think this would be a good juncture for a major barbarian invasion to shake things up. Somebody outs...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

Sounds good to me. I can't syntax, so I think it is wise to go with your suggestion. One note on morphophonology: the locatives, and also the quantifiers, do not cause a terminal /l/ to be "swallowed," unlike the accusative and demonstrative suffixes. So the correct surface form for "all these sleep...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

@Dunomapuka: I'm currently working on my new Lukpanic dialect (which has just gained some information about numerals btw), for which I plan to actually write a basic sketch grammar, and I've encountered a question regarding Proto-Lukpanic. The short syntax section there says that gerunds and locati...

Does anyone have zompist's original blurb about the emergence of Wippwo? Is that in this thread somewhere? http://www.incatena.org/viewtopic.php?p=564069#p564069 Damn... this was written a decade ago. Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

Some ideas: -Final /ə/ might be perceived as a variant of /a/ as opposed to other /ə/ which are mostly used to break up clusters in loanwords. If you split it up I would use the dot only for the latter, the first could be some variant of the /a/ glyph. -Would also be interesting to have a separate l...

Re: Conlang relay [relocated] (aka "The Cursed Relay")

Good to see some activity on this thread. I haven't been conlanging much in the past couple years, but since I took a peek at Namɨdu a month or two ago I started thinking about Akana again. I think I need to continue building out the history of the Fáralo world and Miedu from where I left off, tie t...

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)

For some reason the Ndok word dôxeu "wild boar" just popped into my head. No etymology is provided but I was thinking this should be another Meshi word, specifically an early Meshi * døra , later reflected as dera . Also, what if a couple more traces of the old phonation contrast remained in the sou...

Hey all! I've been enjoying watching the continued development of Akana - especially Tuysáfa - and tinkering with my Western side-project, Ayčasamo. Now it's time to post my work on an Akanaran language whose existence has been known from the very beginning but about which little has been written -...

Re: Akana Conlang Relay 2011 (The Never Ending Relay)

Dunomapuka: I'd be interested to see your work on Pre-Proto-Lukpanic, as it might well inform progress in this area. I understand that it does predate ʔuuleomoh considerably but it'd be great to get more of the "bigger picture". :) I'm struggling to come up with a less clumsy name than "Pre-Proto-L...
