Me either.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure I actually have the sensation of touch at all during dreams. I can't recall feeling wet, hot, cold, or anything during any....

Re: Sounds That You Can/Can't Pronounce Easily

I mostly simply use [l_G] in my personal transcription for L's that "should" be light.

Re: Sounds That You Can/Can't Pronounce Easily

[l]

Yes, ordinary "light" L, because mine is always either [5] or velarized [l_G], even word-initially.

More generally: If it's pharyngeal or not pulmonic-egressive, I probably have trouble with it. I can pronounce most clicks in isolation, but....

Re: Linguistic Quackery Thread, take 2

I think it's a useful exercise to practice avoiding passive voice, since (just like everything else) it can be overused to detrimental effect. This statement is doubted by me. No detrimental usage of the passive voice has ever been observed by me. Have a mirror. I was being deliberately sarcastic :P

What's more is that it's not even something that can be excused by (c wut i did thar?) Latinophilia, as Latin had a passive voice.

Re: Yet Another English Spelling Reform Thread

My recommendations: - Remove unwarranted silent letters made during the prescriptivists' "OMG LATIN IS TEH AWSUM LETS MAKE ENGLISH LUK LYKE IT!!11!1!1" phase; e.g. the <b> in "debt", the <s> in "island", etc. - Correct some of the more egregious spelling discrepancies with respect especially to vowe...

Sixthed and concur with Astraios.

Although it might actually be fifthed, since I don't see how Canepari can fourth what he/she firsted.

Re: Effects of higher gravity

If it helps, assuming no difference in density, gravity will be proportional to the radius: V = 4/3 * pi * r^3 for a sphere F = G * m1 * m2 / r^2 ; dividing by m2 (which we assume to be 1 kg) to get g, we have g = G * M / r^2 (M=mass of the planet). Letting M = rho * V = rho * 4/3 * pi * r^3, we get...

Re: The dream thread

Last night I dreamed I had gone back in time to the year 2000. I spent most of my visit to the past on the Internet, though there were tons of anachronisms - for example, Wikipedia and TV Tropes both existed, even though neither had been created yet in Real Life 2000. They were , however, different ...
