Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Why do they say "Ibiza" as "eebeetsa" in the song? Isn't "Ibiza" pronounce "eebeetha"? Because the Venga Boys are a Dutch band, and that's how the Dutch pronounce it, probably under the influence of German. Had they sung [ibiθa], no-one would've understood them. (EDIT: Another hit of theirs is "vam...

I'm also very happy right now because last month I started learning Chinese. My mother is from Hong Kong but didn't teach me to speak Chinese. I don't know very many words, but I have a good teacher, so I'm learning quickly. Da "Chinesisch" nicht eine einzige Sprache ist, und deine Mutter aus Hongk...

Which once again shows the superior orthography of German and Dutch, that clearly distinguish noun compounds from adjective + noun :).

Also most of the existing IE language families like Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Balto-Slavic, Italic, Celtic and Germanic are (or were once) spoken close to the Balkans. I thought the consensus is that Germanic has it's urheimat in Southern Scandinavia, and only in later times did they migrate to th...

Clearly you have no familiarity with the concept of evolutionary radiation . I find it a bit silly to post a link to a biological topic, while we're discussing linguistics. Also, accusing people of "not having familiarity" with such a well-known topic is akin to name-calling. Tone it down please. JAL

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread
Funnily, the <'t> everybody seems to pronounce like [tʰə] is actually pronounced [ət] :). It's an abbreviation of <het> [ɦɛt]. And the double <oo> is best approximated by the GOAT vowel. I won't bother you with the Dutch pronunication of "Gerard" though :).
