Explaining sound change?

Hello all, it's been a while since I've been to the ZBB; college got in the way and the military keeps me fairly busy. In that time, conlanging has fallen to the wayside, and though I dabbled in reading some interesting grammars here and there, I haven't managed to properly understand sound changes....

Re: The Official ZBB Quote Thread

Since Arka is the topic of discussion, I wanted to add this (which I found utterly hilarious):
Colonel Cathcart wrote:

That is why we must enlighten you.
Even if you don't want it, yet you need it
It is the best way.
Guys I think Arka might be a cult.

Most of my childhood (from about age 6 to age 13) was spent in the Tacoma area, I would have to say I have a PNW accent. But, I don't have merry/mary/marry merged. Merry has [E] while marry/mary have [{]. But it is true that [ei] is more [e:] with me. I'm actually not sure how common it is to have [...

I recently attempted to make knäckebröd , and only with some recipes from online, it turned out rather well I suppose (I've never had it before so I can't compare it to any other knäckebröd), rather like a cracker I suppose. I've eaten it all so I have no pictures for the thread, however the recipe ...

I use both systems (I prefer 24-hour, so I keep my computers set to it; also, IRC clients almost always use 24-hour), and I remember times in whichever system I hear about them in. In speech, I only use 12-hour, but I'm in America and everyone here uses 12-hour. Everyone? You sure? I know both, but...

You know, if it makes you feel any better at all, apart from a very slight accent on some words, I can honestly say if we talked, I could easily mistake you for a native speaker of American English.

First he makes the LCK and starts a conlang community. Then he gives out the LCK in book form with four times more material and makes us all want to buy it. Zomp, you're almost a cult leader by definition. :P You wouldn't be so kind to let us members have a little discount? Every follower of...

I haven't been able to find the Cossack dance, from :50 to 1:19. I've looked everywhere. It's still a great performance all throughout though, I enjoy it. I wish they'd come down here.
