I used to pronounce Arkansas as [ɑɹˈkʰæ̃nsəs] but I learned that it is actually prounced [ˈɑɹkæ̃nsɑː]

It helps to learn one language at a time.

I never got the language mixing thing personally.

Re: Language revival revisited

A dialect of Dutch is not equivalent to a separate language. You mentioned yourself a process of levelling towards the standard language, and a dialect of Dutch is still Dutch. You have an old-fashioned conceptualizaton of what constitutes a language and what constitutes a dialect. The Zeeuws diale...

Re: Language revival revisited

There already is plenty of media in Welsh. Some of it even gets consumed. But the reality is that even if a child is fairly unprejudiced as to whether they want to watch English TV or Welsh TV, which many are, there's only one Welsh-language TV channel (and not really enough demand to even justify ...

Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

For a non nativespeaker, spelling pronunciation is often the only option. But honstely I can't remember ever needing to pronounce 'autumn'. Keep in mind that I don't actually SPEAK Engliish a lot, only if I need to give a presentation in which I won't need words like these, or when speaking to a non...

Re: Cheese that smells

Feel free to think that. It will probably, however, result in being banned. What rule am I breaking then? I am following moderator guideliens in that I no longer post in the venting thread. I tried to combine my vents in my own personal thread, but this was removed. So what else can I possibly do? ...

I would especially if a vowel comes after it. But no native speaker here.

Re: Language revival revisited

Perhaps there should also be more investment in producing Welsh media (books, television, film dubs, subtitles, series dubs...) so that children can actually have Welsh immersion other than talking to grandpa.

Re: Language revival revisited

I think it's better to look at the amount of speakers of the national language world-wide, than look at the size of the country. Portugal is small and insignificant but knowing portuguese still opens many doors, for example in Brazil.

Re: Personal names between languages

In traditional societies like these you need to get children in order to, you know, survive if you live to an older age. And for quite simple reasons it wasn't really a choice whether you got children or not (lack of anticonceptiva for example). Though there were childless people of course this ofte...

The reason that I replied with a joke was that he does that thing you call 'bullying' (I wouldn't seriously call it that as it puts me in the position of 'whiner', and I am not a whiner) in almost every thread where we encounter each other, so instead of reacting to it seriously I simply posted a jo...

Re: Language revival revisited

People don't seem to know the positive effects of bilingualism. This is also why dialect declined (but did not get eradicated) in the Netherlands; knowledge of dialect is deemed to harm a child's knowledge of standard Dutch.

Re: Happy Things Thread

Where did my venting thread go, by the way? Mods, we've been over this before: please pm me if you delete any post, as it's very annoying. Eating homemade Chicken Kung Pao right now, the version with sichuan pepper in it and which is not sweet. What an odd sensation, I never used schuan pepper before.

Re: Language revival revisited

Maintaining two distinct languages is not difficult, it's in fact quite common throughout the world. Many Indian people maintain Hindi, English and a local language which is sometimes not even indo-european (and there are more Indians than there are europeans in the world). Large swaths of Africa ar...

What I also find funny is that the situation of Irish (official language, orthography, lots of literature, more speakers) is worse than the situation of my native dialect of Dutch (not recognized as a language, no fixed orthography, almost no literature at all, only about 100.000? speakers). Childre...
