Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

I will visit Lithuania at the end of this month. I have never been there, and I would love to know what there is to see there. I will visit Vilnius, but I could also visit other regions of the country. I think Lituania is a very cheap country, and the train tickets aren't very expensive? Do they ev...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Eu vou visitar Lituânia no final desse mês.

I can *imitate* an actual englishman relatively well, but I can absolutely not speak like an actual englishman during random English conversation. I take out my Dunglish there automatically.

Re: Natlangs that look like conlangs

Ulithian uses a, e, and o with a single dot over them in the alphabet, for who knows what, and I have seen a Taa example using a small capital g. Lithuanian also has single dots on letters how is that weird. As a general pet peeve, I think linguists should stop making up whacko symbols for the lang...

Re: Confusing headlines and other trips down the garden path

Thats a dumb one cause such things happen all of the time.

As with Commissaris van de Koningin van Zeeland (commissary of the Queen of Zeeland) which makes it sounds like Zeeland has a queen, but Commissaris van de Koningin is just a certain function in the provincial governments in the Netherlands.

On top of that, the correlation between genetic and cultural groups is rarely straightforward, for any number of reasons. For one thing (based on this article I read on Language Log ), it's very likely that both the male and female most recent common ancestors of all indigenous Americans whose geno...

That means that Greenburg might have been wrong; it doesn't mean that Greenburg was insane . Besides, it's true the proposal lacks adequate linguistic evidence; but then, you can't prove it's false either. Having an opinion on something where there's inadequate evidence to come to a robust conclusi...

Re: Happy Things Thread

I am so happy to be back in Brazil now. It feels like home. The funny smells everywhere (one moment you smell poop and the other moment some delicious food which is being cooked next door), the lovely fruit, the lovely heaty cooking of my family, and of course seeing my family again after many years.

Ib my experience, Germans are very friendly but they are also a less 'enthousiastic' people, and more silent. Perhaps some people perceive this as if they were not nice people , but I do think they are nice, if a bit formal. Czech people are not so nice if you are not related to them. A lady in the ...

In France I don't think you can get very good food unless you go to very high end restaurants. Where did you go to eat in France? Hamburger Quick? no, it's just that I do not remember any good French food in particular even though I have spent more time in France than in Portugal, and I have memori...

I do refrigerate mine, but that's because I'm single and take so long to use a jar, it starts turning colors and tasting a little odd. Spanish food is nice but you do need to know what to order If you just randomly pick something odds are high that it's fried and that you receive no vegetables with it. For example if you order a bocadillo calamares (a sandwich with squid) you will not receive any salad or sauce on it which is bad b...
