Re: 24-hour speedlanging challenge
I figured I'd let someone else who adhered more to the rules give the next challenge. Take as many hours as you want between 1 and 5 (or whatever; the idea is to do it in one try), sit down and get working on a dialogue. Content and size up to you. Constraints: between 3-5 vowels without suprasegmen...

Re: 24-hour speedlanging challenge
Okay, I gave it a go, check there . I put most of it in this html page. But this is long and tedious so there are tidbits missing, like the fact that the alignment becomes ergabs when the sentence in the past tense, put it shows in the examples. I haven't fulfilled most conditions (word number, stri...

Re: Theory of Magic
Thought I'd chime in. There's magic in my conworld. In early years, it occurred as random events due to it not being fully understood. Many specialists (shamans, medecine men, etc.) emerged and made use of their knowledge to find applications to magic. Then, a few people actually spent their life st...

I don't get what's so bad about it. It's just a name, it doesn't need to be pretty or anything.MrKrov wrote:No, it's pretty terrible, actually.

Incidentally, Bricka, I'm unable to access your website anymore! Did I miss where it got taken down or moved or something? Think his host terminated its domain or something like that. I still have the Climate Cookbook printed though... without the pictures :P But I did get a sad face when I tried t...

Oh, I missed that reply. About the floating continent, high pressure is what I expected, although I really forgot about it possibly blocking sunlight... So yeah, I have to know at which elevation it is. In any case, I like the idea... Then, floating continents work in such a way that they rain below...

Re: How do you develop your language families?
Thanks for the answers! I had to sort them out by question number to really get a big picture of what you were all saying. I also considered answering to everyone individually but that seemed counter-productive. 1) I expected that sort of complicated/not-so-sure answer. I figure topology will play a...

How do you develop your language families?
While I've got all the linguistics under control (or at least I think so), I'm having trouble shaping the families into my conworld. A few precise questions: 1) At which rate do new languages split off from their mother-language? To put a bit of context, it's a proto-language, not written, spoken by...

Re: Noun classes and infinitives
There's also the possibility of assigning the gender based on the phonological form of the word. For example in one of my conlangs, all nouns ending in a fricative are feminine (root only, not counting suffixes). In another, there's a class which is basically a bin for cases like this. Maybe you cou...

Or being able to give a rule a "probability value" to be triggered for each word. That way you could have something like: V > 0 / C_C (33) k > zh / V_V (60) Would mean that 33% of the time, the first rule is triggered and does indeed affect the word, while the second is triggered 60% of the time. Ho...

I'm pleased you included the --diff feature. Makes it a bit easier not to have to switch between files to check what is the original word. I had an issue lately: I have these rules: # coarticulated consonants are all lost in Proto-Ori gb > w / {# V}_V gb > b / _# kp > ph / _V kp > kh / V_ # by analo...

Proto-West-Dirim:Next word: lead, as in the metal.
/tʰum/: refers to something similar to galena. High amounts of lead and usually significant amounts of silver. Basis of the currency system of the West Dirim civilzation; probably used as a word for 'money' as well.
Next word: cup.

Really like this! The GIMP hints are really useful for a GIMP noob. Hope you're still on this and that we'll see something about oceanic currents. Some questions though: 1) What would be the overall effect of massive patches of ocean and relatively few, compact patches of continents? For instance on...

Very useful tool. Suited my needs better than any other SCA yet, good job! However, one thing I really like from Zompist's is that you can make it so the output is of this form: changed_word [source_word] If you could make such an option, it would be perfect. Another thing I've run into had to do wi...
