Re: Creativity of the day

Well Reddit had no interest in this map I made but perhaps you all will find something interesting. I compiled all of the data myself from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It took 2 weeks to hand color every county.

Il fait beau ici; hier il a dépassé trente degrés. It's lovely here. Yesterday it got over 30 degrees. Je vais faire une randonnée de quatre jour s autour d' un lac ce weekend. C'est un des ' Grands Chemins' de la NZ. I'm doing a four day tramp (= hike) around a lake this weekend. It is one of the ...

Merci ! Tu as enseigné le français, n'est-ce pas ? Donc j'ai confiance en tes corrections :) J'essaie encore d'arrêter de ronger mes ongles par la seule force de la volonté. Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to?

I'm currently working my way through a biography of Victoria Princess Royal, Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Empress of Prussia and mother of Wilhelm II. After I finish this book I am hoping to read one on Princess Victoria by Hesse and Rhine, Victoria Princess Royal's niece by her sister Alice. H...

Re: Transatlantic differences in the subjunctive

For me, the present subjunctive is fully productive, and it sounds odd to me when it is not used when expected. My view as well. Sometimes I might allow the indicative with "to have" but not "to be" and not any regular verbs. "It is important that he have all necessary documents." "It is important ...

it is important that the supply exists. You are not the first Brit I've seen who didn't use the subjunctive in what would typically be a subjunctive phrase. One of my curriculum guides at school which comes from Switzerland and so I assume is written in British English is wrought with expressions l...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread

Can we agree to stop saying "attorneys general," please? The plural is "attorney generals." I know that from a purely prescriptivist angle it doesn't make sense to add the plural to the adjective, but it's an unusual word with an adjective after the noun it describes and "attorney generals" is the g...

Re: What do you call this?

I would not call it a "wardrobe"; to me, that implies a piece of furniture with legs that is detached from the wall that you could move around and such. (also, "wardrobe" always makes me think of Chronicles of Narnia anyway) If it were in someone's bedroom and they stored clothes in it, I suppose I...

あ、覚えてた!それより、ライデンとかが好きなの理由は、アムスは汚いテーマパークみたいだった。あるところがきれいで、美術館がすごかったから、行く方がいいが、他の都市は本当に都市の感じがあった。 Oh I remembered my other point: more than just that, the reason I preferred Leiden and the other cities is that Amsterdam is like a dirty theme park. Parts of it are beautiful, and the museums are amazin...

People down here in Memphis keep asking me "What are you staying?" to ask where we're living. Is this use of 'to stay' a Southernism? The use of stay is not weird to me, and I am a Wisconsinite, even though it implies impermanence, as if you are there only temporarily. The use of what here is quite...
