Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
Are you saying that the AirBnB is beautiful? Or that the overall landscape is beautiful? If it's the latter, I think you should write " c' est vraiment beau" instead. Non, je faisais référence à l'AirBnB, c'est pourquoi j'ai utilisé le pronom. Parfois je fais des trucs vraiment bizarres en français...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
"They says" and "She don't" don't seem very random to me. Use of "says" for non—third-person-singular seems to be pretty common in colloquial speech (like "I says") and use of "don't" for third-person-singular seems very common in many varieties of English; see this post: Historical and contemporar...

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
I discovered today that my grandfather misconjugates verbs. I think he's always done this but I just never really noticed it. He says things like "they says" and "she don't." I'm curious why he would do this (my grandma certainly does not do it). All I can think is it's because of his very working c...

J'ai écrit , qu ' il y a rien qu'on puisse faire , et personne plus n'écrit plus rien ici? Je ne savais pas , que je suis si influent. I wrote that there's nothing one can do, and noone writes anything here anymore? I didn't know that I'm that influential. ;-) Oui, franchement c'est bizarre. Les ge...

Regaining the sovereignty of European nation states, so they won't be ruled by Belgium (who can hardly control their own non-country). Europeans are ruled by… Belgium? I went through the same thing towards the end of my MA program. Things went a little differently (my thesis was not going so well) but the dilemma was similar. Since about freshman year of HS I was convinced I would become a linguistics professor. I love linguistics. I love learning. Etc. but durin...

Does anyone have any advice for how to figure out what you want to do with your life? I'm at that point now. I have several options before me and I don't know what to do and I have to start making decisions soon. I did well on my MA thesis and my committee is very much encouraging me to continue for...

Re: Erghhh... Prescriptivism
Since we're talking about prescriptivism, shall we talk about what is perhaps the world's most standardized and therefore controlled (in the sense of language authorities exercising control) language, French? The French authorities on language are so stuck up their asses that the Académie française ...

Ärligt talat, det är tämligen oroande för mig att läsa orden “East Prussia” / „Ostpreussen“ i den moderna sammanhang, därför att i dag, i Polen, denna identitet existerar helt enkelt inte. To be honest, it's quite unsettling for me to read the words “East Prussia” / „Ostpreussen“ in the modern cont...
