Re: Creativity of the day

What's the 25 year anniversary about? And who is the knight rider? ;-) The 25th anniversary is the celebration of the fall of the Ilian Empire (in 1993)*, which then led to the establishment of the second Republic about a year or so later. The knight is imagined to be a King of Ilia (Járvan, eldest...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy (2)

Minor vent: I took my iPhone (5) in for a repair about a month ago. Turned out the battery was faulty, but, fortunately, I got a new-ish phone today (after about a month of runaround and waiting for a response from them)... and it turns out the phone doesn't work properly! (The home button won't re...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy (2)

That was also what I was trying to add to the conversation: own your dysfunction. If you genuinely want to have a better relationship with someone, do what you need to do to get there. I watched my father struggle with this all through adolescence. He was never close to his father, who was a quiet ...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy (2)

(attempts to hide under the table as a result of the argument) Anyways, something I’ll also add a bit to the conversation: if you know you have a problem, whether mental, emotional, or otherwise, then the only way to change is if you first recognize or admit there’s a problem. No amount of therapy r...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy (2)

When you told us about the divorce, I didn't realise it was that kind of situation. That sucks. I didn't realize this until last Friday either. I knew my dad was seeing someone, but not that they were trigger-happy enough to fly to Nevada and get hitched there to bypass Texas' 30-day waiting period...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

My parents' divorce was ratified/finalized about three weeks ago. Today, I got an e-mail from my father saying that he and his current girlfriend have gotten married.

This kinda hurts.

Re: The Contradictory Feelings Thread

My parents' divorce has been finalized... coincidentally (perhaps) just under three years to the day my father left my mother. In some ways, I'm relieved that it's done and over with, but it's still not pleasant. (Now to figure out how to manage trips back to the US when they're about 1200 miles apa...

Re: Creativity of the day

I spun it with two plies of white and one of a variegated green/black/gold. The white stuff is superfine merino wool, and the green is a merino/silk blend. It turned out QUITE soft and I'm quite happy with it. I already mailed it off to Canada. :P I'm in the redditgifts yarn exchange. I hope the re...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

Boss made an extremely inappropriate remark to a coworker of mine in front of everyone in the room (almost the entire lab group). Lots of awkwardness ensued, especially since he's the boss and calling him out is probably a horrible idea...

Re: Happy Things Thread

So, the lab group I'm in here in Luxembourg was charged with hosting this year's German Liquid Crystal Conference. (Why they picked Luxembourg is a mystery to me.) In any event, I also was awarded a slot for an oral presentation on some of the work I've been doing on interfacial tension of liquid cr...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

So, after a fun week in the UK seeing friends and castles, I had quite a "fun" adventure getting back to Luxembourg yesterday! – I arrived at the train station a few minutes late for the Eurostar check-in due to Tube mishaps, meaning that I couldn't board the train. Fortunately, not all hope was los...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

Result just in: 66 percent of SPD members voted for the coalition agreement. Looking forward to talking about this with my German coworkers. I'm not surprised this happened (I think there'd be more surprise if the deal fell through), but it's definitely not going to be too positive for the SPD when...

its not like i'm a big spender, but in my experience quality greatly increases with price when it comes to sextoys. in other news, a pack of cigs here now costs three and a half lucas, which is slightly below five euros or something like that, and real estate prices are nearly five times what they ...

Re: Venting thread that still excludes eddy

Since my most recent (Scientific) publications, I've been flooded with a fuckton of spam/junk e-mails for predatory conferences and journals, and it's just gotten much worse after my first publication as a first-author ( despite me not including my e-mail on the publication! ). I wonder who on earth...

Your currency looks so convincingly European. (It is supposed to be European, right?) The countries in question are European-influenced and inspired, but there really isn't a precise geographic area I've pinned them to. (I'm too lazy to try to work through an althistory with them.) I just largely h...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election

The CDU, CSU, and SPD have finished their coalition deal! It now needs to be approved by the total SPD membership. The results of that vote will be published in early March. Sigh. I mean, Germany's already gone for five-ish months without a formal government, so what's another month? Now the questi...
