Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
Ah, yeah, the changes I presented over on the CBB weren't meant to indicate free variation, but variations of each of the original Proto-Hasjakam vowels found in closed and open syllables respectively. Since I didn't present any changes that could have caused those variations to become phonemic, I ...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I seem to recall recently seeing a suggestion that high vowels have the potential to cause affrication of stops, which would (if true) help explain Japanese /tu/ > [tsu], for example. So, I was wondering, could this change be extended to affect all plosives within a language, e.g. /p t k/ > [pɸ ts k...

It looks like that's how whoever entered the data has chosen to represent /j/ (which is absent from the inventory given). It's definitely a weird way of representing itQwynegold wrote:And what on Earth is that /e̯/??

What are some interesting things to do with geminate consonants? Currently I have /bː,dː,gː,pː,tː,kː,zː,sː,vː,fː,mː,nː,lː,jː,ɲː,ʎː/ I'd like to do more than just degeminate them, especially if they could develop into something less Romance-y. Geminate unvoiced stops could become ejectives. If I rec...

Re: Stability of vowel systems
Also, out of curiosity, does anyone actually have a link to something showing evidence of nasalization leading to open vowels? I've heard it before, but none of the evidence I've seen actually supports it. It just supports some kind of vowel changes, but that can be all kinds of different redistrib...

Possibly annoyingly for you, but yes
As for the second part of your question, I probably wouldn't find it all that distracting

Thanks, Sangi, but what could I do to specifically word-final /z/ (that absolutely isn't shifting to /s/ or /r/)? Palatalisation could still be an option if it were progressive rather than regressive (IIRC, Early Old French had both?). If you have Vj diphthongs, then the same /z/ > [ʑ] > [ɣ] > [ɰ] ...

What can I do with /z/ that isn't shifting it to /s/ or /r/? /z/ > [ʑ] before /i e j/, which could then either become [j] before /i e/ and possible shift backwards to [ɣ] (following the [ʃ] > [x] shift of Spanish?) before /a u o/, then becoming [ɰ], dropping out before /a/ and shifting to [w] befor...

Holtzmann's Law in East and North Germanic
So, I get Holtzman's law in general, i.e. the doubling of *w and *y in certain positions in Proto-Germanic, and then that *ww and *jj became *ggw and *ggj in North Germanic and *ggw and *ddj in East Germanic, but I'm having a little trouble figuring out what happened afterwards. Looking through Wikt...
