Re: Articles and other missings
So when in doubt when creating languages with and without articles, use that as a go to? Also, is it possible for a language with articles to have a daughter language without them and if so, how?

Re: Articles and other missings
Yes, but how? Vulgar Latin descended from Classical Latin, so I'm trying to figure out how it gained the articles

Articles and other missings
So, I was just reading up on my Lating (always a good language to know a bit about for conlangery) and I was thinking about it's daughter languages. I find it funny that it has no articles, but most, if not all, of it's daughter languages do. Why did this happen? How does a languages parent go from ...

Language Families
How are languages usually considered relatives? For example: Proto-Indo-European = Italic = Latin-Faliscan = Latin. What makes Latin-Faliscan that different from the other languages in the area if Latin and Faliscan are considered two different languages, but they are related to the other Italic lan...

It's really weird to be considered hot. I used to be awkward, but I'm probably just really photogenic. But thanks for the compliment!

So I saw that someone thought that English is pretty much just an glorified creole. What do you guys think about this?

Re: I once heard...
I sincerely doubt that all European historians and linguists agree on this. It's one of the most hotly contested languages in all of linguistics, come on.

Re: I once heard...
I'm not surprised actually. It seems like one of those things that conlangers love to discuss.

Re: I once heard...
I never heard such things. My introduction into Basque was that it was an isolate language and it didn't seem to be related to anyone. Though there are quite a LOT of theories on where it came from.

Re: Small states
Now that makes a lot of sense. Different views and philosophies always make for a good fragmented map. As do geographical barriers. Here's the map with what I believe to be proper placement of mountains: http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/tt239/britman185/Worldbuilding-1-1.jpg (I found a way to do i...

Re: Small states
Well, my small hypothesis that probably isn't all that accurate is that there are a lot of players vying for power and that's exactly how I'm going to fragment my states.

Re: Small states
Oh, I just assumed it was me. Also, this not having paint or anything of the like will irk me something fierce. But since the continents literally take up the same place as Africa and Asian would in our world (with a small ocean in between them) you can probably guess what the climates are for the w...

Re: Small states
Oh, I have read quite a few books on the matter. I even have a book all about the formation of Rome and how it worked right in front of me. I was/am just trying to see if anyone could find a plausible reason for their to be tining states instead of medium to large states.

Re: Small states
Alright, Alright. I see that I'm going to have to work on my history a bit more. Figure out what happened to get these barriers. I was thinking about having a Holy Roman Empire-esque nation in existence as well. Looking at this map I can imagine the whole north western portion of the larger continen...

Re: Small states
Very, very good point. I should probably establish more geographic 'things' than just mountain ranges and a few rivers. I should figure out where the deposits of precious metals and gems are . . . and basically anything that makes a society strong.
