Re: Poetic words for "sky" and "sea"
The usual Spanish poetic word for "the sea" is la mar , which is the common word for the sea but with the opposite gender (normally the word is masculine: el mar ). I've noticed a similar phenomenon in english referring to the ocean as poetically feminine, such as "the sea is a harsh mistress". Som...

Re: Cellar door
I'm probably in the minority but I love rhotic accents and hate non-rhotic ones. Non-rhotic accents always feel as if the end of the word just trails off: "sellaah daaah" is just ugly as hell. I like words with rhotics and voiced continuants: rain, river, more, bizarre, etc. I mean the phrase "gweit...

This is neat. Is this in R, Rust, or some other language?
I also notice almost all the features return either 1 or 0, which I assume to be a yes or no, but some return a 2. Is this a mistake or what do the numbers mean?

Re: Languages without allophony
I'd reason all languages have allophony, simply because not all languages contrast all human sounds. Even in languages like Ubykh there's plenty of room for allophony: [h~hʷ~hʲ~ɦ], [l~ɫ], [m~m̥] . And are there other factors that can impact the amount of allophony a language has, aside from just the...

Is there any way to download them all from google drive at once? I can only seem to get one at a time.
Edit: Found out like 2 seconds after I posted. Open it in "my drive", right click the parent folder and download.

Greek language is going to be extinct and that can be very soon, but the Greek vocabulary will remain internationally. is that a threat? Is it really a threat if its a fact? After the Germans kick Greece out of the EU, Greek will be demoted from indo-european to isolate. After a language is declare...

I still find it hard to pronounce melee as anything other than [mi:li:].
Recently:
Melanin [məl.'ʌ.nɪn] > [me.'læn.nɪn] which makes its pronunciation in line with melanocyte and melanogenesis.

I once saw a documentary on TV about the San, and they have a story that the language they speak contains so many clicks because if they speak with each other during the hunt, the sound it makes is more "natural" than speaking without clicks, and hence doesn't scare away the animals. JAL I've heard...

Re: What, where, when
Ok, going back all the way to PIE, *kʷó-d vs. *tó-d ("what" vs. "that"), *kʷó-m vs. *tó-m ("when" vs. "then"), and *kʷó-r vs. *tó-r ("where" vs. "there"). In this case, *kʷo- and *to- are adjectival pronoun stems derived from the more basic pronoun roots *kʷ- and *t-. At this point it seems pretty ...

Re: What was your first conlang like?
Read wikipedia article on conlanging, hooked ever since. Immediately I tried to make one, I loved the concept of a personal language. I made a list of all my favourite "sounds" and I remember it being about 12-13 phonemes (one of them was [k͜v]). I then made my own alphabet with a 1-1 phoneme corres...

Whoever came up with Australian languages lacking fricatives and all those POA were trying to be unique in a nooby way.
If we can also do conpeople, then whoever made this up was trying to be a smartass.

What context is this script used in? Priests, educated elite, the common tradesman? Is it written on stone, bark, paper? Is it for formal situations like legal documents or is this also meant for quick note-to-self scribblings? If its meant for handwriting is there a cursive/simplified version of it...

"On accident" sounds more natural than "by accident", but "accidently" (accidentally?) sounds the most correct to me.
