Re: What are you reading, watching and listening to?

Reading; Haven't stuck my face between pages in a while. I keep meaning to get back to Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. Pretty interesting, yet gets repetitive and historical in the middle rather than philosophical. After that I suppose Ill get to that Russian Diachronics book I was meaning to get...

Damn...I never realized how normative I was toward my concultures. (Then again they are only in the beginning of the development stage). This is some great advice that will go a long way. keep it up you Chilean genius!

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

What is a good way to incorporate [ɨ] into a language from a proto-language with the following vowel system?

Code: Select all

i u
i˞ u˞
e̞ ə o̞

        a
        a˞

I was thinking something like [əi]>[ɨ]

Way to take a dump on my thread, MrKrov. Find a bathroom next time ;) I mean, we're on a CONLANG board. Who cares about usefulness? I'm learning a language with a speaker population of one: me. What we do is about as useful as stamp collecting. The cool thing about Esperanto compared to other conla...

Man, that stereotype is literally about 90% true for the area I live (hint: Texas). Well the Bible thing is like 100% true, the pick-up thing is like 90%. Maaaaaybe 85.
Dude...there's pickups EVERYWHERE in Texas!

Don't have too big of list of other conlangs that I'm interested in. But here's the lot: Na'vi--Although the orthography sucks and it bares some similarities to English, I was very impressed by the verbal system. Ithkuil & Ilaksh--These langs are probably old and forgotten by now. Even though these ...

A bit of a large creation myth for an empirical conculture for my conworld. (This is a really rough draft so please forgive the crude names. the First God is somewhat of a devil figure at a later time. the Guardian, mentioned briefly, will function later as an Adam-like figure.) Before dirt, grass, ...

Remember to use [ square brackets ] for phones! Since I live in the south I turn /ai/ into /a:/. The only time I do this really when I say bye. /bai/ /ba:/ I wouldn't say that's really an example of the Southern /ai/ > [a:] change. I actually know several people who say [ba:] or [b{:] for "bye" (I ...

My dialect, or more so my idiolect, isn't too different from the standard. Since I live in the south I turn [ai] into [a:]. The only time I do this really when I say bye. [bai] >>> [ba:] My [r] is retroflex. But, I think a lot of Americans have retroflex [r]. Sometimes I'll voice the end of my words...
