Re: Sound Changes - Monosyllabisation

I agree with the gent above me. Not only is this post extensive and enjoyable, it's quite entertaining because it raises so many interesting ideas for my own conlangs. But, I did have one question. (ii) Loss of voicing of (very) creaky voiced stops, yielding ejectives Being a lover of ejectives, I h...

Re: does high phoneme appearance affect sound change?

You could also argue that very low frequency phonemes are more likely to undergo change and merger because their low frequency increases the chance of misperception, and decreases the disadvantages of loss. I agree. Mostly used sounds are less likely to change bc people use them all the time (count...

For a second there, I thought that was a giant fish for real. Reminds me of how I always can walk by dolls around stores selling clothes several times, and I always think they're real people. It's really unpleasant. Whence do you come, by the way? A friend of mine once decided to be a little creati...

This is the current phonology for my revision of PEL--which at first turned out as a euroclone and has now been revised to resemble less-western languages. Nasals: /m n N/ Stops: /p_h t_h k_h q_h b d g p' t' k' q'/ Fricatives: /f s S K x X/ Approximates: /r l w j/ Vowels: /i e a o u/ Diphthongs: /ej...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

What could give rise to a dental/alveolar contrast in coronals? Castillian turned Old Castillian /ts dz/ into /s̺ z̺/ and were later fronted into /θ ð/. Based off this it seems easy to create a change like the one you're looking for: > [t̺] > [t̪]. That is to say that alveolar chronemes had their s...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

And as Nort said, you could just use pre/post nasal stops. I might actually just go with this, at least at the phonetic level. Do the stop parts of prestopped nasals have to be homorganic to the nasal? That is, is something like [ k m] reasonable? I think you have it backwards pal How? A prestopped...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Depends on what liquids you have, I'd say. But you could definitely at least get away with prestopped nasals there. I'd like to have /km kn tm tn/ and then I have a lateral /l/ that I really don't want to combine with anything. It does seem more likely that other liquids should be allowed to take t...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

These are all some good suggestions and I thank you all for suggesting them. These suggestions have given me an idea of what to do with this language next. Therefore, I have devised a rule: "Only one sonorant per root had an epinthetic vowel inserted following the effected sonorant. Sonorants that a...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I've reached a dead end in the sound changes I am making for proto-Elezaic, the analogical equivalent to PIE in my conworld Elezai. Syllable roots can contain large clusters; such as: *brlnt "new". My goal is to eliminate these clusters in my current project Shanus. But I'm finding trouble pinpointi...

My French teacher would consistently teach us French idiomatic phrases and we all loved it! Plus it improved our French and made us so...
