Re: Word with most long vowels only?

I think my accent in Japanese has improved a lot, but vowel length is the one thing that trips me up still (not a lot, but yeah, sometimes I end up not having long vowels where I need them)

Re: Post your conlang's phonology

Finally looking through this, my phonologies seem pretty boring :(

Re: Kozea Daily - Shitty movies in a conlang

He does have the blonde hair, but he's not quite so fabulous and sparkly. Though I do remember in one of the older iterations(?) of the member photo thread thinking he was a (slightly embarrassed to say) vaguely pretty girl. (he also had black hair at the time... and a bra on, so there's that)

Re: Post your conlang's inspiration

Xokal is meant to be Mesoamerican Linguistic Area like (ignore what's in my sig, I've updated since). The new thing I'm toying around with is going to be somewhere between Arabic and sort of generic Slavic in terms of phonology. Sadly, I get working on phonology and don't ever stop, so I've never go...

Last one was funny. For some reason I always expect you to look like the little cartoon guy in your avatar.

Re: Sounds That You Can/Can't Pronounce Easily

I have a hard time with ejectives, implosives, trills, and glottal stops in word initial position. Otherwise I think I'm fine.

Re: Accents

http://www.alljapaneseallthetime.com/blog/ The guy who runs that site has some videos rattling around with him talking to Japanese friends. I'm not the person to determine whether his accent is spot-on, but I've shown Japanese people to gauge whether he's native-like, and I almost always get freaked...

Re: Post your conlang's phonology

Here's what I'm playing with at the moment: Plosives: p, t, k Nasals: m, n, J, N Fricatives: s, S, x, h Approximants: l, r\, j, w Vowels: i, u, a I haven't come up with a name for the language, but I'm going to try this out with extensive allophony. I might also fill out the palatals more, or have s...

I saw the Terraria on RPS a couple of days ago. I'm looking forward to playing it once I get some sort of work going for the summer.

Re: Need thesis ideas

My major is "Global Studies" or International Relations in normal people speak, but I can make a conlang for my Honors Thesis. Ah, the humanities... Yeah, but the major required me to study abroad, so I was basically first in line for scholarships through the school for it. Otherwise I don't know t...

Re: What are you playing?

Mount and Blade: Warband, Sim City 4, and DWAAAAARVES! And, if I could get my Steam copy to work, Civ III. I didn't realize you were talking about a game called Dwarves! that I just found out about and looks awesome. And as soon as I can scrounge up extra funds, I'm probably gonna get Mound and Bla...

Re: Need thesis ideas

Does it have to strictly relate to your major? My major is "Global Studies" or International Relations in normal people speak, but I can make a conlang for my Honors Thesis.

Re: What are you playing?

I assume Dwarf Fortress. I plan to get back into that, now that I've been playing roguelikes more, it might make sense to me this time.

What are you playing?

I know there's another thread, but I'm not sure I want to resurrect it. So, what are you playing? Lately I've been on a roguelike kick. I've played classics like NetHack and ADOM, and am also trying out newer games like Caves of Qud, prospector, and IVAN. I'm also playing Minecraft on and off. Other...

Re: Words and expressions you overuse

I use 'like' as a crutch word, and for some reason I reflexively say 'I don't know' at the start of almost every sentence... even if I do know. I'm desperately trying to break that habit because it just sounds weird.

Thank you so much for the resources, though anything in Spanish will probably require me to find someone to translate it better than Google.

Resources for Mesoamerican Languages

I'm having a bit of trouble finding good resources on languages and language families such as Uto-Aztecan and Mayan. I've tried my university library but the only book having anything to do with the subject is only tangentially related. Does anyone here know more about the subject, and could potenti...

I don't think it matters whether it's a representative or pure democracy, either the majority vote to win on the issue, or vote in the people who will vote their way, and by virtue of being the majority, win. Depending on how the system is set up, of course, this can be minimized, but I don't think ...

Democracy, for instance, is opposed because it promotes values that problematise excellence, and because it is a totalitarian and hence life-denying ideology (but none of that is contrary to the will to power; on the contrary, it is a fine example of it). Wait, how could anyone call democracy total...

I've been listening to The Pillows (mostly stuff they did before 2004), and スガシカオ among other things Japanese. I find it helps with listening comprehension and occasionally learning new vocabulary (though reading or something with a visual component seems to be better for that).
