Re: Languages without Quantifier Hopping?
They do; I included them just to give the focusing a context. In a real-life situation you could easily drop the “and not …” part.

Re: Languages without Quantifier Hopping?
Hebrew doesn’t have it, and it’s actually one of the very first things you learn if you go to formal language classes, precisely because English does. Bagehenom noten hasatan limtakhneney-safot lekhaber sfot-ézer. in=DEF-hell ACT.PTCP\give DEF-satan to=ACT.PTCP\plan-MP.CONS language-FP to=INF\author...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
Yes, we transcribe them as voiced stops. That doesn't mean that they were voiced stops! The most likely hypothesis would be that they were (voiceless) unaspirated stops, while those transcribed as voiceless stops were aspirated. Such transcriptions are common where no actual voiced stops get in the...

Non, j’ai eu des problèmes avec le trac aussi. Je suis portière, mais en tant que telle je dois des fois présenter les fleurs aux acteurs et aux réalisteurs à la fin d’une première, ce qui compte comme partie du spectacle mais qui ne vaut pas de répétitions ou d’instructions en avance — tu viens da...

Re: Obscure question about Greek
The Greek has συκῆν εῖχέν τις πεφυτευμένην, so yes, Greek has have + participle, but retains the possessive meaning as in “someone had a figtree [which was] planted [in their garden]”, rather than the present perfect “someone has planted a figtree” (according to here).

Your friend’s blog isn’t evidence, especially when said person claims right there in the blog to be an undergraduate linguistics student who mocks professors of Semitic languages for refusing to see what they have “proven”.Frislander wrote:https://lateralfricative.wordpress.com/

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
I don’t see how the fact that most modern Semitic languages have non-lateral reflexes of *ś impacts its reconstruction as a lateral at all… Most IE languages don’t have voiced aspirates, but PIE is reconstructed with them (or something very like them). Anyway, you haven’t brought any evidence or sou...

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread
the idea that Greek "balsam" must necessarily represent a lateral fricative is stupid: it's cognate with Arabic /basam/ "pleasantness", a correspondence which gives Proto-Semitic *š rather that *ś, so it should have therefore been /ʃ/ in Hebrew as well which was just badly transcribed because Greek...

Re: Minor Semitic Deities
I remember reading years ago that an early translation of the Hobbit glossed "Elves" with צַפְרִירִים, from a cognate of English zephyr that was used (in some Talmudic source?) to refer to "spirits of the dawn". I can't find anything on that now and the present term seems to be בני לילית, lit. "son...

There are multiple -της. There’s the abstract-nominal feminine third-declension -της, -τητος which is from the PIE suffix *-teh₂t-s (and cognate to Latin -tās, -tātis ), and there’s the agentive masculine first-declension -της, -του which is an internal Greek development (later borrowed into Latin a...

-ης is the (Attic-Ionic) masc. nom. sg. of the Greek first declension, and itself has an older form in -ᾰ (the final sigma being borrowed from the second declension in -ος (Latin -us )). The masc. nom. sg. of the Latin first declension is -a , and there’s a very strong tendency for borrowed nouns to...

Re: Spanish 1SG verbs in -oy
Whatever the reason, it’s certainly more recent than the split between Castilian and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), as the latter doesn’t have -oy, but -ó: yo só, dó, vó, estó; yet it does have hay, which maybe tips the scales in favor of -oy coming from -o yo.

I mean, really. The dictionary very clearly states in the exact entry linked in the OP that the use of ain’t as a replacement for ‘does not’ is what is associated with AAVE; this is entirely correct: the vast majority of other dialects don’t use ain’t for ‘does not’, and utterances like “I ain’t (do...

Thanks for the kind words, guys (and hwhatting for the corrections). You’re all invited next year — and there’ll only be one pomegranate dish, promise. :)
