Re: So, inspiration! :D

You have to keep in mind that I've been active here for only two months =/ I still don't really understand. Basically two teams create a proto-language from which a set of daughter languages is derived and then giving those daughter languages to the other team each team attempts to reconstruct the ...

Seeed - Aufstehn

Easy because I almost never listen to Englishy stuff.
It's either French, Sanskrit, German or something Celtic (usually Welsh) even though I sometimes do listen to Slavic and Icelandic stuff

Re: So, inspiration! :D

Much like the original, I'd expect. Two teams are organised; one member on each writes a grammar sketch with a lexicon and a short sample text. This is then sent to the rest of the team, each of whom derives a daughter and provides a similar description and a translation of the sample text. Then, e...

For my newest project, Qaar, I've taken Blackfeet-and-toes as my primary inspiration, but I will actually draw inspiration from my other conalngs.

Re: So, inspiration! :D

I'd be interested, actually. After the odd little challenge (like glossing Uyseʔ quotes) I'd rather like to take part in something big. But as an Akana member, I'll also shamelessly suggest it be set in one of the less fleshed-out parts of Akana :) Sure, this might actually be even better than just...

Re: If I had a time machine...

I'd study the poorly documented languages of southern Europe such as Etruscan. Bring home an Etruscan translation of a major work of Greek literature (we know that they existed, but, alas, none has survived). That would be the Rosetta Stone by which we could unlock the secret of Etruscan! Ertruscan...

Re: Linguistic resources you wish actually existed

I'm not sure if it exists or not, but. I wish I HAD a free, online Albanian etymological dictionary. If not that then a cheap hard copy one. With accuracy and showing native words vs. loanwords. Etc. If you go to Albania, I'm sure some bookstore might have an English-Albanian dictionary. It's widel...

Re: How to Design a European Phonology (in Interesting Ways!

Buuut ... allophony is synchronic. Native speakers usually don't know the details of their language's historical development. For some wierd reason, Serbian kids can make pre-Slavic-Palatalisation sounds... And retrace [ɔØ] to [ lØ], when [ɔØ] < [ lØ] happened in the fifteenth (?) century. And they...
