Re: Phonetics... I don't even.... :(

@masako, @dyolf, I appreciate your suggestions and links, but I'm not new to this. I read these things many times over the years. And you can see my registration date on this forum as well (2010). Linguistics is my hobby and I spent quite some time researching the subject, even though I don't have ...

Phonetics... I don't even.... :(

So, here's my story. 1. I decide on a beautiful phonetic system for my conlang. 2. I create an amazingly cool grammar (in my opinion, obviously). 3. Profit? No... not quite. So, then I create a script that would generate some gibberish sentences in that language abiding by the phonetic rules and by ...

Re: Certain aspects of grammar (big discussion!)

The general answer is "Yes, you can do whatever you want." If you've read the LCK you're aware of how other natural languages do things. If there is no morphological way to do something, it can be done lexically. Some specific comments: Might not be a bad idea to re-read that again. Pt's been some ...

Certain aspects of grammar (big discussion!)

So, I'm back to designing conlangs after some time doing something better with my life. And I have a few questions :) I did my research obviously, but I am still not sure and would like to hear your opinions guys. 1. What is the point for having grammatical future tense in a language? I have designe...

Re: Georgraphical languages

Not a Lexipedia reader, I guess. :( I guess not. Let me google that and see what I missed :) Kind of a provincial way to put it. Statistically, less familiar languages will always have exotic features-- no matter which languages are familiar. If there are 5000 languages, only 50 of which are well k...

Geographical languages

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but search didn't show any such topics. Anyway, I was reading an article on NY times and it raised a very interesting topic about direction distinction in languages, and specifically about languages that don't have relative coordinate system and instead use g...

What do you think of Risen 2 conlang?

What do you think of Risen 2 conlang? It is very simplistic, but they tried to make it sound like some kind of african lang. Also they mix it with english so that anyone can understand at least something :) My feel - they could have done it more interestingly. But all in all it's too much to expect ...

About conworlds, geography, geology, etc.

Good day everyone. I remember there were a few awesome topics on this forum where people duscussed ways to design conworlds from perspective of realism. I was only able to find few discussions but not these big threads that I remember reading before. Can anyone point me where to find these topics pl...

Which clicks are you having trouble with? Bilabial ejective, velar ejective, uvular ejective, alveolar lateral ejective affricate. But I didn't really practice them, so maybe they are not that hard aftaral :) Oh, and I have trouble with labial-velar nasal. How do I pronounce epiglottals? I can't te...

Re: Question about chinese dialects

Lots of 'sha shy shu' definitely sounds like it could be a dialect of Mandarin. Here are some youtube clips of different dialects: ... Oh. Thank you :) Now I can tell that it was most likely Dalian dialect. All other seem totally off. But still the way they spoke were slighly different. Maybe it is...

Re: Question about chinese dialects

Just by probability it was most likely Mandarin, Cantonese, Min Nan or Hakka... It was not mandarin, that's for sure, as I can easily distinguish mandarin. But for the rest... Do you know any places where I can find samples of these dialects. I tried to search youtube for some videos, but found not...

Re: The humour of similar-sounding words

Here's another one for you. This one is from Russian.

"Водку найду" = "What can I do" (pronounced in very simular way)
But russian one means "I will search for vodka" xD
So it is from the song which goes like "Водку найду, What can I do"

My way to teach yourself to pronounce all sounds

Hi everyone ^_^ I don't know why I didn't think of that before, but here it is. My way to train yourself to pronounce all sounds. Obviously by all I don't mean "all", but quite a lot :) To prove that it works - I can pronounce almost any sound from ipa table (expect few odd clicks and lip flaps) and...

Far too little information. That description fits something akin to 3/4 chineses! Yes... As I said I found this dialect very interesting and I would like to lea...

Question about chinese dialects

I have encountered a group of tourists recently and I had a chance to listen them speak. They spoke some chinese dialect as I can conclude. I don't know what it was exectly but I'm really interested in knowing. Ok. They used a lot of sha, shy and shu sounds, almost NONE explosive consonants, and the...

Argunent about subject - object, could you shed some light?

We (my friend and I) have an argument about whether one word in a sentence is a subject or object. If any of you are professional linguists (there are many, i know :)) could you shed some lite on that problem? >> >> >> .... Re: Ability to speak english the way it should be

If you learn to talk like Jane Austen then nobody will be impressed-- you won't sound intelligent or sophisticated, you'll just come across as pretentious and weird. This is because nobody talks that way anymore, no, not even smart people. This is why I wrote explanation in the first post, I'm not ...

It has a totally different feel to it, and it uses mostly completely different phrases and figures of speech that we use today.

You are right... but by "old english" I didn't mean the actual term "old english", I only meant english that was spoken about 100-150 year ago in it literature form.

upd: ah, I didn't notice your "seriously ..." part. Thanks you for the info I will contact him right now.

Ability to speak english the way it should be

Now long ago I was reading Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle and I was just literally blown away by the language used. It is very old english, I guess from 1860-1910, and it is just beautiful! How can I learn to use that kind of english? I guess I just need to read more old books... but... I do ...

Re: Conlangs With Non Human Phonology

I've seen starts and sketches and so forth but no full language. It's likely too daunting. I think it's fascinating idea to make such lang :) I've thought about the concept of developing a language that'd be played on the guitar, but it's beyond my musical ability to actually make it, let alone "sp...
