Re: CCC game - Voting rules discussion
Surely this is fairly meaningless unless there's some discussion in advance about what type of setting this is? (particularly since on the evidence of the first round there won't be much discussion in the voting process itself). I mean, are you asking for fire elements and giants, or humans with bu...

It also survives in déchoir and échoir , which are a bit more common, and follow the same paradigm.

Re: the Old Granny thread
But to be honest, the kilo of meat costs about 6.50 euros, and the bottle of Westmalle Dubbel costs 1,20 eur. So it's not really like it's that big of a deal to use a slightly more expensive beer. I think four people can eat from it easily, probably more, so it's not *that* expensive for such an ab...

Re: the Old Granny thread
Carbonade! Great!
The recipes I know use more regular beer (Leffe, to be specific). We drink the Trappist beer instead.
Adding a bit of sugar (or even gingerbread!) is traditional in French Flanders, though not everyone likes the sweet and savoury taste.

Re: CCC game - Voting rules discussion
For the continent voting, can we have the votes be based on the design of the continents themselves, and not the prettiness of the maps, to make it so the voting doesn't end up being a "pick the best drawer" contest? to some degree I am in agreement: but, on the other hand, the quality <as opposed ...

Re: CCC game - Voting rules discussion
I don't see why we should restrict ourselves so narrowly with regard to biology when we're going to be designing everything else from the ground up. If I'm going to replace proto-Indo-European with pseudo-Taa, I should be able to put it in the mouths of octopus-birds with lemur tails for tentacles....

Re: CCC game - Voting rules discussion
Does anyone else agree that its probably just better if we were to skip the sapient thing and just go for humans? I mean, alien languages are incredibly complicated, and I'm not seeing a lot of interest on coming up with radically different sapients... Maybe we could keep to an exercise in physical...

That's an excellent idea. I second that motionCivil War Bugle wrote:If we do that, it might also be interesting, although not necessary, to permit votes for multiple continents to get the fullest picture of which ones people like.

Another vote for:
1. Anyone should be allowed to vote.
2. People shouldn't be allowed to vote for their own work.

Sure, I'm in.
Though I'd like to leave the continent creation to more competent hands and skip this stage, my map making skills being what they are.

Re: Non-Tolkienian fantasy
Sure, there's a lot of everything. But there's also a huge amount of fantasy NOT in mediaeval europe, was my point. Though having said that, what fantasy actually does have elves? No real disagreement, actually. It's always nice to get recommandations though! The bit about elves was mostly a joke, ...

Re: Non-Tolkienian fantasy
I would think 'fantasy not in mediaeval Europe' would be too large a category to really make sense listing. My own impression is that there's a lot of medieval-ish fantasy; most of it didn't get any recommendations from genre fans because it's not very good, mostly. I'm not sure 'medieval' is the p...

Re: Non-Tolkienian fantasy
To begin with, I have three suggestions, that aren't usually classified as fantasy, but rather as mainstream litterature. If so, and if you've liked Borges, I suggest you read these three: On the Marble Cliffs by Ernst Jünger. ( Heliopolis is excellent as well, but is a lot closer to science-fiction...

I'd like to know how the distance is calculated too. But assuming they're counting recognizable cognates and borrowing, the Romance part looks about right.

Re: Slang For Penis In Europe
I'm not entirely convinced it makes sense to classify French 'bite' under 'things that pierce'. The etymology is apparently unclear: I always thought it was from 'bitte', bollard - but apparently there's not enough evidence; it could also be a derivation of Old French 'abitter', 'touch, approach' or...

Harry Potter question: do you percieve the differences between Ron, Harry and Hermione's accents? And if so, what? Not an American, but I hear a difference between the three, and I'd like to know if it's just me :) Hermione sounds more posh - she's also the easiest to understand, usually a good sig...

Hey, thanks!
So I've got the answer to my question, I didn't get very close
Systematic palatization couldn't really be reconstructed with the data - but there are some mistakes I could have avoided, like the final vowels.

A handful of -tentative- reconstructions I've found that it helps to maintain a list of possible ancestors. Here are some of the most plausible ones (Doesn't mean I'm satisfied with them, though). Re: On A Genetic Connection Between Skourene and Wedei
Vowels I really feel the painful effects of lack of data. The cognate list is short enough that one non-cognate form is probably enough to make the whole analysis invalid. But hey, why not try anyway? Once again, that's probably really, really sloppy. It seems pretty obvious that OS drops the root'...
