Re: Faites-le le
The second le will often be reduced to /l/ with the schwa elided, if the following word starts with a consonant that isn't /l/. Except for southern French where the schwa is never elided... Would that be Occitan influence? I get the impression now from looking at different langues d'oïl and langues...

Several things about them have left me a little dejected. - On may 1st, the black blocks decide to sack a McDonald's. Mélenchon claims it "must be the far right", despite all evidence. - Violent insults to Libération (left to far-left newspaper) from FI supporters for reporting an accurate - but dis...

Hey, let's revive the thread a bit. The really fascinating thing about French politics these days is how Macron has utterly destroyed all opposition. I can't even tell who's supposed to be the opposition party. The natural question is: is this the result of the election, or its cause? On the one ha...

Re: kårroť scratchpad - Necroes welcome!
I believe the question to ask is: how do Earth humans know about kårroť? Who found out about the species and how did kårroť humans look to them? If there is no or very little contact between Earth and kårroť, using "human" makes a lot of sense. There is no real need to distinguish both species most ...

Re: Cultural approaches to handbooks
That would be standard practice in France, especially chez Larousse . I have several editions of French plays which have a huge structure of critical apparatus. I think the American/British preference is only enough apparatus so you can read the text. You could put everything in a critical edition,...

I couldn't find the original claim, but apparently the hypothesis had something to do with the drawings of baths and fountains.

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election
More generally, the theme seems to be that the people are completely uninterested in regional-level government wherever you are, until an independence movement comes along. I always thought the Germans are on the whole, very satisfied with the federal system, interested in regional-level politics, ...

Re: The upcoming (September 24) German federal election
People generally vote for parties rather than individuals; as a result, German legislators are very heavily dependent on their parties, and almost never vote against them. Ich habe eine Unterschied zwischen die Wahl während des Ermächtigungsgesetzes (und das französischen Gegenstück) in Deutschland...

That was a great write-up, by the way. It's not your fault that Germany's politics is so much less dramatic and absurd than the UK's. Seconded. That was great. The party of current Chancellor Angela Merkel, which might be confusing for some English speakers, given how much she is seen as a heroine ...

How popular is Merkel, really? It feels a bit strange that she could conceivably stay in power for 16 years straight. Though IIRC Kohl stayed just as long.

Re: A Very Brief Explanation of the British Election
But, more seriously, was this sort of complexity common in premodern states? E.g. was ancien régime France just as much a pile of ancient titles and exceptions, but we don't notice because it got reformed multiple times? Or has Britain always been an eccentric outlier? Yes, the ancien régime was po...

I'm finally finishing my thesis, yay! It's in computer science, but leaning heavily towards linguistics. The main focus is on text classification; that is, how can we get a machine to statistically analyse a text and figure out, for example, who wrote the text, the author's gender or age, whether t...

(Personally, I do feel it's a bit rude of Brits or Americans to expect that French people will speak English as a matter of course. But that's another debate entirely.) What if Germans or Spaniards would expect it? Does that make it less rude? Especially since expecting someone else speaks French i...
