I was trying to figure it out myself what with eyeliner being somewhat unisex again. I didn't want to say anything. No offense, shower cap.

Re: ZBB Census

I had a neighbor who at least nominally converted to Zoroastrianism in high school. His mother may as well have been a model for Ricky's mom from Better Off Dead, foreign exchange student and everything. I don't think there's a corrolation there.

Heh. Amerocentrism ahoy! When you said 'Southwest' I figured you meant Arizona until I hit the political section. Also, it's a modern 'fast' one to make a single encounter more interesting. Edit: I also apparently glazed over the 'Nationality: English' part.

I am currently listening to Pet Sounds. At this very moment, both the album and the track.

Is this why this is the fifth one of these? Because they inevitably dissolve into petty back and forths?

ZBB Census

[Edit: Typo] I'm sure something like this has been done before but I didn't see where. In one thread we were trying to decide statistical percentages so I figured that I'd ask it specifically. I don't ask anything I don't feel comfortable revealing so: Age bracket: 25-40 Gender: Male Nationality: Am...

Re: ZBB member photos, part 5.

Here goes! I do wonder, though, why conlanging attracts such a huge number of gay men My gut reaction is that this is a chance to create something fictional: a language, a culture. Something outside reality. Thus marginalized people of all stripes will gravitate to this. Of course, this should mean ...

Re: Introduction to Sociology for Conworlders

For example, a common debate I've had is whether human societies naturally get more complex, and will almost always adopt technologies (in this sence, including cultural things like a representative government or writing or taxes aswell as more reguliar technologies like the wheel or guns) if they ...

I'm personally iffy about any site that has a book to sell . . . present company excluded of course. Seriously, their bit on punctuation reminded me of that old war horse I'm sure you've all seen:

Re: Introduction to Sociology for Conworlders

I think there's a difference though between the 'un-us' who violate every single one of our norms for the sake of violation and those that adhere to some and do not adhere to others with an internal consistancy. I think the former would lose audiences more than the latter, even if the violation is i...

In private speech I use the f-word in all its various forms (although rarely as an infix). Also, in writing, I use also a lot. I overuse, I don't know if this is the right term, imbedded phrases.

The glottal stop

This may well be one of those ultra-basic things taught in Linguistics 1, but are there any (I don't want to say rules) general characteristics of languages that have the glottal stop as a phoneme? Just to make sure I am not misusing the word, what I think phoneme means is a contrasting sound, like ...

Re: Sounds That You Can/Can't Pronounce Easily

I am a native speaker of American English. As a child I conflated the dental fricatives with the voiceless labialdental fricative /f/. With training I produced a dental fricative but ONLY the voiced. Incidentally, I also failed to produce l-blends, whatever that is, and r's. Somehow this combines to...
