That's fantastic, Ceresz! Very atmospheric :) Thanks :)! Ceresz: The landscape is gorgeous. Reminds me of an MTG card, actually. Still pretty. Hah, thanks ;). Here's some more crap. Wanted to paint a figure, but then I realized I suck at painting figures. I need more practice. http://dl.dropbox.com...

Re: Sources of "because"

That is actually och though (at least according to the prescriptive rules that I've seen), so you're more educated than you think. Swedish connects a lot of things with och . Jag ska sitta och läsa. Try putting it in the present tense or past tense. Would you say Jag går och handlar or Jag går att ...

Re: Sources of "because"

How often do people pronounce the infinitive marker as /at:/? Not very often it seems. :/ Many people even confuse with och in writing. :x I know. I've seen infinitives introduced with <&>. It happens, but thankfully not very often. I'd expect it to happen quite a bit when reading a text aloud. Peo...

Re: Sources of "because"

Swedish has för att (lit. "for to") and därför (att) (therefore, lit. "there for (to)"). Don't forget that att is both a particle to introduce infinitive verbs in some constructions (Eng. to ) and the complementiser (Eng. that ), so in those examples, I'd translated the att into English as "that" b...

The easiest way to settle this would be with a recording, even though I doubt it'll turn out to be favorable for Helios's transcriptions, at least in regard to the stress.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

Soo, I'm trying to decide some sound changes for Kàmo, and I can't figure out what to do with /ɾ/. What can this phoneme turn into? For the purpose of convenience, assume that all syllables in the language are (C)V (this is pretty close to being the case anyway). g ɣ gʟ I believe /ɾ/ → [ʃ] and /ɾʲ/...

It has VOWELS Especially if you take a look at the traditional dialects and not the modern ones which are basically accents/variants of the standard language. In the traditional dialects you can find long and short ô , which is usually described as a vowel "somewhere between å and ö " (a good refer...

My L1 is Swedish, but if you go back a few hundred years I guess some of my ancestors spoke French, German and some other languages. Not that it really matters. The only other language I was kind of brought up around is English, but that doesn't really count. So it's only Swedish, really.

what's with all you people who say you have [ɨ]... in English ? Umm, that's the schwi , a near-close unrounded central vowel, which exists in English dialects that have two or three centralized, reduced vowels (i.e. most). Marking it as [ɨ] is simply marking it as what it is, considering that that ...
