Re: The price of using magic in a conworld

If a fantasy world is inclined to use magic and treat it as a sort of tool (much like Harry Potter or most video games I can think of), then it would probably make more sense to put some sort of limitations on what can be done with magic and how magic ultimately affects the user and the world aroun...

Re: Efficiency of languages and conlangs

Hey people, I'm addressing a question to you which has been bothering me for a long time. Whenever I notice that translations in different languages differ in length, I wonder whether some languages are better in conveying information than others, or in other words, whether some languages need sign...

It's quite easy to do this in VHDL and run them on an FPGA.

FineReader OCR program -- help needed

Does anybody know the FineReader OCR program? I need some tips and tricks to improve the recognition rate. For a job, I need to read ca. 100 pages of multi-language, two column text in text script, italics and boldface with this program. I've done ca. 25% already, with error rates of ca. 5 to 9 %. M...

Re: IPA pronouncer program

There are a lot of different text-to-speech programs out there for different languages and such, but surely someone's made one where you put in the IPA and it says the word out loud? Surely that'd be simpler than programming for a specific language even! A program like that would be invaluable for ...

Re: Language/writing systems in a telepathic society

So this idea came to me when I was walking home today. In a society where telepathy is universal (ie everyone can communicate telepathically), what would happen with spoken language, and writing systems? My first thought: "Can anyone communicate with anyone, or does said telepathy have a range?" If...

Re: The Sound Waves of Sounds

Does anybody know of a study/paper/webpage that shows what phonemes actually look/sound like as sound waves? Also, with such waves in mind, one could also compare waves and define a difference/distance between two sounds, and then compare the distance between pairs of similar phonemes that merge in...

Re: Linguistic reconstruction and maths

It appears to me that there's quite a clear relationship between linguistic reconstruction and some kind of information-theory maths. Clearly there could be defined a function rec(mutter, moder, mother, moeder, móðir, móðir, muter, mither, mader, (whatever it is in gothic)) which spits out *mōdēr, ...

Re: Five-point tactile alphabet for input/output

I don't think that E should be done by the thumb. If you want that e.g. for a cell phone, you might wish to press it with the thumb while entering the text. You always need the thumb to hold the device. Maybe providing two buttons for the thumb, selecting two 16 character pages. You think so? I gue...

Re: Five-point tactile alphabet for input/output

Good work, Tmeister. I like the X-shape of the touch cell and the hexagonal shape of the ''dots''. What will be the code for zero? You should reserve at least the first 15 codes #A to #O for decimal and hexadecimal digits. You also should reserve at least one code to enable further extension of the ...

Re: LaTeX: How do you insert IPA characters?

I noticed a lot of people around here use LaTeX, and I've been using it myself recently. Thing is, I've been struggling with typing the IPA characters. Since any grammar written in LaTeX will likely make use of characters from the IPA, I've been wondering how you all handle IPA characters, like the...
