I thought I was the only one that say that sentence.
Well, Skomakar'n is you, after all, so technically, you are the only one that... say... that sentence... whatever that means. (?)

Re: What are you playing?

Now I'm playing Skyrim and Battlefield Bad Company 2. Skyrim is really awesome; I didn't like Oblivion too much, but Skyrim is much better. And Battlefield seems nice (haven't got the chance to play it yet - I'm running it now), and now I'll be able to play it with my friends. :-D

Re: What are you playing?

I want to play Portal 2, but it isn't working. :(
So I'm playing Altitude instead. It's fun, and now some of my friends are playing too. I'm also playing eRepublik, as always... (since last month).

About your signature: it's funny, because "ran" means "three" in many of my conlangs (numbers were often borrowed). So 1+1 =... 3?

Improving my mapping skills on RPG Maker VX ACE. Had some trouble with the chairs; all of the chairs are turning the same way, so I had to improvise for now. There are a bunch of things out of place there; there were also other things I wanted to add, but I was too lazy to change the room size again.

Re: De Meleagrum

We had a discussion about this in another thread some other day... It seems that in most languages, it's named after the country it came from. So <peru> in Portuguese, and French, for example, it's because it came from the West Indies. And in English, I think someone said it's because it was brought...

Re: What writing systems do you know

I've seen people (L2 speakers of Arabic and Hebrew) switch to a left hand when writing in Arabic or Hebrew. Does this help writing right-to-left or just a writing comfort thing? Or a habit? And the greatest disadvantage of right-to-left writing is that when a right-handed person (such as me) writes...

Re: PIE to Latin - Grammatical Changes

For another point of view, according to Roger Wright, there was never a real Classical Latin -> Classical/Vulgar Latin stage, but just... a Latin stage, with a writing system/convention getting farther and farther away from the vernacular. Then the Carolingians came and introduced a system where wo...

Re: PIE to Latin - Grammatical Changes

Thanks! I'll look into this book for sure. By the way, this may be a strange question, but it is related to Latin. Namely, was Classical Latin ever a spoken language? I assume the written form was based heavily off SOME stage of spoken Latin, at least. Mainly what I'm wondering is, does the evoluti...

Re: What writing systems do you know

The only kana symbols i haven't recognized are the ones for nu, ぬ and ヌ, because they seem to be the least common by far - n can end a word on its own without an epenthetic consonant. But i'm getting better with kana just by being here - at first i wasn't 100% on which was which of クケタ, for example...

Re: What writing systems do you know

I can read and write the Latin alphabet, Greek (ancient/modern), Cyrillic, Arabic, Hiragana, some Katakana, ~100 Kanji, a bit of Hangul (pretty much the same as finlay here) and Hebrew. That's it, I think.

Arthur's theme song sounds so unnatural in English. The LORD obviously intended it to be sung in Hebrew.

I was reading TV Tropes and it raised an interesting question: If a man changes his name upon marriage, what does he call his old name? Obviously maiden name does not work. TV Tropes offers bachelor name. A neutral name may be birth name. The obvious answer is whatever he wants, but does anyone kno...

I'm not a native English speaker. I used to stress the second syllable, but then I heard my native speaker friend (and others, perhaps) stress the third syllable. I've been stressing the third syllable ever since.

In Hebrew it's תרנגול הודו, /tarnegol hodu/, "India chicken". Sometimes it's shortened to הודו, /hodu/, "India".

Re: Endonyms that have intersting connotations in other lang

In Hebrew, the root ʕ-R-B means "Arab", but also "interfere". So when you say "Don't interfere" in Hebrew, it looks/sounds like "Don't be an Arab". Not really the same, but it's funny. Well, I've never noticed that. However, there is a similar pun with ʕ-R-B. This is also the root for "evening"; so...
