Re: AAVE names
People in Israel these days have horrible names... Akhzava (disappointment), Adolf (well...), Khalon (window), Shulkhana (table...fem?), etc. Some are disgusting and insulting, some are stupid, some don't make sense. They tried to implement naming regulations a few months ago, but I don't think it w...

Re: Linguistic Quackery Thread, take 2
You will have to explain your millinylands system to me some day, you know. :P It is simple. A nyland is a unit of measurement for linguistic quackery. The standard is Edo Nyland, a crackpot who claimed that all languages were conlangs made by Basque monks or something like that. That is 1 nyland. ...

Re: Family histories
Apparently, one of my ancestors and his brothers were Christians in Bohemia, though from what I gather, they might have originally been Jews. Anyway, my ancestor got into a fight with the local lord and threw a piece of meat on his wife. Then they had to run away, and they came to travel around the ...

Re: The dream thread
I had an interesting dream, and I managed to write it down, so I'm really happy right now. The dream itself involved me thrown back in time to the 4th grade, where I soon found out I had to crash on a particular target jumping from a supersonic kite to get back. I got the kite and found the target, ...

Dr. Clyde A. Winters: The culture hero Huang Di is a direct link of Africa. His name was pronounced in old Chinese Yuhai Huandi or Hu Nak Kunte . He was supposed to have arrived in China from the west in 2282 B.C., and settled along the banks of the Loh river in Shanxi. This transliteration of Huan...

Rockfour - האיש שראה הכול
Awesome band. I've been listening to two of their Hebrew albums - האיש שראה הכול and העולם המופלא. (I'm never going to transliterate Hebrew).

I've got a system for rating public toilets ... it grades what level of horror the bathroom inspires in you based on what rhetorical question you are left with level 0 is the completely unremarkable experience we all hope we'll have when we use a public or business's toilet level 1 is a "who" facil...

Re: accents
I can do a nice Russian accent in Hebrew, I think. It used to be horrible, but studying a bit of phonetics really helped me figure out what I was missing. In English, I guess I can pull off some stereotypical British accents, but I don't think I'm as good at it as other people I know who practice it...
