Re: Your first conscript
I started when I was 11, it was an English cypher where each English letter equaled a syllable and each word was a portmanteau developed from an abbreviation of the English word. In highschool, I had a Latin-valued script based on Phoenician/Iberian scripts, but this was when I was retooling my own ...

@Znex: Someone (either Kloekhorst or Melchert I believe, though I don't recall exactly where I saw this) compares the - n(i) with the final -ν of the Greek 1pl -μεν. It's likely to be some particle with a meaning that made it possible to become fused to plural verbs. The first person plural in -μεν...

F, like a but āre, ēre, ere, īre > ar, eor, -ear, -iur; where the open syllable is ultimately lost, obscuring their source. 30. E. Huh. That's weird. I got a letter in the mail from a man in Ismahi, said my uncle died in a Kebreni prison and if I paid some nominal fees and taxes, I would inherit his expansive shipping trade. Except, I just blew my last paycheck doing the same thing for another uncle with his estate in Barakhinei.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
My pet theory is that the PIE reflexives are based on the personal pronouns with a *-w- suffix. I seem to remember reading somewhere that such a reflexive suffix exists in Uralic, but I don't know where. Your theory is more than likely correct, based on an analysis of the pronominal systems: 1st pe...

Well obviously. Anything made pre-IAL (International Anime Language or International Arts Language) would still fall under dub-or-sub continuity. We'll simply eliminate it going forward.

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
I think you mean "typically" instead of "invariably", as they are definitely not completely closed, not even in Western European languages. Pronouns can be borrowed (e.g. English 3rd person plural) or invented (many honourific pronouns are abbreviations of addressing formulas). Prepositions can be ...

Why did I open this thread again? Because you're a glutton for punishment. More foreign arts and popular entertainment from countries with widespread multilingualism (such as India)? I am not really sure if people will take cultural products from "exotic" lands that well, and really doubt the benef...

I also can't help but wonder if the IE languages' extreme aversion towards nominal root ablaut but uneasy tolerance of verbal root ablaut (Even Sanskrit had completely bowled over root ablaut in athematic nouns) has some deeper linguistical meaning. Kath isn't wrong that there's a lack of answers f...

Re: Settings for your conlangs?
It all depends on the language, really. Proto-Deithas and its descendants are spoken in a world that I haven't touched in six years. Déru, on the other hand, is a vehicle for another story, as are the smattering of IE pseudo-lects resembling Proto-Greek, Indo-Iranian, and Proto-Italic, which belong ...

I am not suggesting that I agree with Beekes 100%, but I understand why he isn't decisive on the link between n̥bʰrós~ἀφρός. I find the form too perfect to deny the relationship, just that the semantic shift from IE is unusual to raise question.

ETYM Meillet BSL 31 (1931): 51f. connected Arm. p'rp'ur 'foam' (which does not belong to <σπείρω>), but the ἀ- is problematic (*h2- would give a- in Armenian), and the *bh presupposed by Greek did not give p'. Not to Skt. abhra- [n.] 'cloud' (because of the meaning), not to ► ὄμβρος because the rul...

RE: KneeQuickie, I replied to Viktor's post. Pretty much because of the Spammening, I shut down all user accounts. You have to reregister with an application that I have to manually go in and approve. There's nothing wrong with the wiki (except a weird bug now where I can't upload images. What the h...

Re: The KneeQuickie still exists [Discussion]
It's been several years since I've had the time to put anything at all on these sorts of wikis, and even when I did use them I never posted anything very extensive. Personally I would prefer to host stuff on my own webspace (not that I'm doing any of that at the moment, either ...). But this is jus...

Re: The KneeQuickie still exists [Discussion]
Well, I've never visited the KneeQuicky much, or Frathwiki for that matter, so I'm not sure what it's meant for. Also, putting stuff on a platform I do not control I find a bit dangerous. No offence Neek, but I don't know how good you are with backupping :). JAL This is fair (I say three months aft...

Eh, I'm not looking to compete with Frath. They've got their thing going with that awful ziggurat logo which is plastered across conlanging continuum. I'm more interested in just providing a hub for conlanging and linguistic information, as well as hosting information to whoever wants it. I'm not pu...

Re: The KneeQuickie still exists [Discussion]
@WeepingElf, few people, if any, utilize the KneeQuickie anymore. I think I somehow cranked out 2.6 GB of bandwidth this month, and most of that was through webcrawlers, not living people and users. To be blunt, it's a sad state of affairs if I want to keep the KQ alive. I'm glad there are resources...

It hasn't. The correspondence library still exists in the pre-Spammening archive. It needs to be ported over to the new wiki, which I should be able to do soon. Here's a quick link for reference: http://www.kneequickie.com/archive/The_ ... ce_Library

The KneeQuickie still exists [Discussion]
So I've been absent from the board and conlangery in general. My most recent project, Pontic Kurian, has taken on a pause as I start to work on a series of naming languages for a bronze-age fantasy story I've been desiring to work on. Part of my absence has to do with the fact that I'd rather produc...

Re: Designer spacetimes for FTL and profits
I've never been one to muss around with FTL physics for a few reasons. Most notably, when writing a science fiction story, I'm more willing to negotiate how FTL travel affects the properties of the society I'm dealing with. Taking a look at a lot of writing forums, subreddits, etc., there's a breed ...

Perhaps it didn't take long for their gut fauna to adapt to a new source of energy? After all, necessity is the mother of invention, evolution included. On the other hand, I would argue that whichever divine entity that brought them over would at least look into that as a potential problem. You don'...
