It actually means "final sprint", but can certainly be applied, and sometimes is, to the final days of a sale.Gulliver wrote:Swedish slutspurt, which I think means "clearance sale" or something.

Re: Cool or Trendy Languages
1. The "cool factor" only applies to language nerds and fans of various fictional things. Otherwise people learn languages mostly only when they have to, and only as much as they have to. I partly disagree. Yes, people mostly learn languages when they have to, but I know several non-nerds (unless y...

Re: The dream thread
Torco has the dubious honor of being the first zbber I've dreamed about (as far as I can remember). Apparently there were other zbbers around, but who they were, where we were, and why we were there is shrouded in the mists of my subconscious. Anyway, Torco kept poking me with a piece of wire. I was...

Re: The dream thread
I was at a house party, and some other guests were looking out the window, saying "Look at that!" and someone mentioned a UFO. I looked out, and saw a large vertical disc-shaped thing spinning quickly straight up in the air. I told the others it was a Ferris wheel that had come loose, but they seeme...

Re: Scandinavian/Nordic
At least in my part of Sweden (Stockholm area) the general consensus is that Norwegian is easier to understand than Danish. It very much depends on the specific dialects of Norwegian and Danish, though.

Re: Anal Retentive's Modern Usage
it's not unfair to say that anal retention is about poo. More specifically, it's about the control of poo, or rather controlling your bodily functions. In Freud's view, too harsh toilet training can lead to a fixation later in life, the consequences of which are quite similar to the obsession you d...

It's not supposed to be, so I assume the subconscious message is the opposite (plus, I guess, that I should lose some weight).Shm Jay wrote:If that’s a minus sign, then your subconscious is trying to tell you not to eat so much pizza.

Re: The dream thread
I had gone down to my local mall to shop for groceries. To my surprise I saw my sister and her 2 yr old son there. I went up to her, but even though she seemed to notice me she didn't say hello. Instead a tall guy accompanying her shook my hand and asked me how things were going today. I said "Fine"...

And not to be impolite or anything, but Ossicone shouldn't be translating into Swedish if she can't do it better than that... it's pretty much completely ungrammatical. It sure is, but come now... surely we've seen several considerably worse translations in this game? Part of the fun, I think. Ossi...

Re: Stockholm Swedish vowels
No, it's not the same phenomenon at all. Lidingö /i/ (of which you gave a pretty good example, although a bad recording) tends toward [1], but there's something else going on too. Seeing as I am neither a phonetician, nor have any sort of linguistic education, I'll bow to your judgement. The reason...
