Re: The "How do You Pronounce X" Thread

I say the voiced variant. It's been a source of controversy. Where are you from?

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Ergativity? Discuss

Sorry about the late response, on my own thread... it's testimony to how busy I've been and how little I'm checking the board these days. Likewise, my apologies for my earlier posts, both of which were written in a tired state and were all mixed up. (I edited them and fixed them before your last res...

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Ergativity? Discuss

So I would need to both make the agent ergative (although it remains formally intransitive) and add the preposition explicitly?

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Cuneiform!]

I'm thinking about introducing ergativity into the language, to work out a certain problem I'm having. I'm a bit unversed in ergative languages, though, and am hesitant to work with something I know so little about. So perhaps those of you who are more familiar may be able to help me. yáłbit ward ká...

Re: Tutorial: Making a Realistic Triconsonantal Language (be

Right, /sp/ was an illegal cluster. In Arabic's case, the metathesis began by phonological processes, and then spread through analogy. In Proto-Semitic, the t- metathesized when the first radical of the stem was a sibilant. Arabic -- the Semitic hyper-leveller -- extended this to all consonants, thu...

Re: Tutorial: Making a Realistic Triconsonantal Language (be

This idea came to me when I was trying to sleep, so it probably isn't the greatest ever, but: how about showing an example of a triconsonantal conlang derived from (a necessarily tweaked version of) PIE, or something like Latin? It would be interesting. Maybe I'll take a stab at it in the future, u...

Anyway, sorry about that. Please do leave constructive feedback if you have any, folks. Most of Sal's feedback was helpful and welcome, especially in his first post, but in his second as well; thank you, Sal. Just please be thoughtful about the fact that I just spent way more time putting this toget...

Thanks for your input. Glad, also, that your response to my draft of something this community has been lacking for a long time is "Don't bother. I'll create a better example for people to follow one day, maybe" instead of "I would have taken a different approach, but here's some constructive feedbac...

Re: Tutorial: Making a Realistic Triconsonantal Language (be

Thanks guys. I'm not sure that it is unrealistic to just throw in random vowels. It is very unrealistic to just throw in random vowels. Maybe not for you, Sal, who I suspect could write up a decent triconsonantal conlang on your own and using your own method. Certainly diachronic isn't the only appr...

Re: Tutorial: Making a Realistic Triconsonantal Language (be

The next post will be a while coming. It took nearly two days to put this first post together for you. It's still sloppy and incomplete, and needs a lot of editing and improvement still. I have some regrets, since I expected the total project to be a one-day project when I began, and now I either ha...

Tutorial: Making a Realistic Triconsonantal Language (beta)

Paren pindās ma paned bi-yakus asen pasneddā! Part 1/2 Every so often, a thread appears asking for help with creating a triconsonantal conlang. And indeed, there is a severe shortage of a priori triconsonantal conlangs. As someone who is in frequent use of 4 or 5 Semitic languages (depending on how...

Not quite as grand as I remembered, but here is the first post I gave with generic advice. Subsequent posts also give advice, but are tailored to advise about a specific conlang.

Re: Making a Triconsonantal Root Language

Some that I have seen, such as the Semitic languages, derive from Proto-Afro-Asiatic, which had bi-consonantal roots FYI: This is one of those pesky theories that flloats around, sounds nice and interesting, offers an answer to an unknown thing, and is spread around by hobbyists who don't have enou...

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Modern dialects:SOU

I'm putting a stop to the identity discussions. See above. I think I understand what you're saying about a non-Abrahamic religion, maybe. It is definitely meant to have Sebastic elements and traditions imported from their former faith, and they have scriptures written in Sebastic. (One psalm from th...

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Modern dialects:SOU

It's a problem if you have to go all the way to Iraq to find an example of a community that spoke Arabic but remained distinct in identify from the Arabs. With all that said, this is not a thread on Palestinianness or identity. (You're welcome to open one up in Ephemera, if it pleases you). I'm not ...

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Modern dialects:SOU

That seems silly. They do speak Arabic as a bilingual community. Syriac-speaking communities in Lebanon and Syria (almost non-existent today, but were once larger) have long identified as Arabs. The equivalent doesn't exist in Palestine, only because Syriac died out there already and there were no b...

Well, they're a subset of Palestinian. That is, they identify with the Palestinians and the Palestinians consider them one of their own. This is unlike, say, the Armenians, who have lived in the area just as long but never identified themselves with the Arabs. With that said, the Palestinians are no...

Ahlan wa sahlan :) I don't think we should have any disagreements. I shy away from politics in this project, and nothing I've posted should be debatable. As you can see from the history in the earlier post, the only thing I really even touch on with modern history is what I need to touch on in order...

Palestinians. Not sure how/why they could be Druze; the post about the Sebastic speakers that I linked in the previous post explains that they are a Christian community. Certainly most of the Galilean speakers are Israeli citizens.

Re: Sebastic (Semitic lang) Workpad [NP: Modern dialects:SOU

They are all spoken in our universe. They all exist in 'different universes,' in the sense that I don't have them interacting with each other in any way. Nothing happens to the Jews-- why would it affect them? Sebastic has nothing to do with them. This is a map of the Sebastic communities in Palesti...
