Re: Incorrect pronunciations you have (or have had) to unlea

It definitely took me a while to realize that the first word of /ˈkæviɒt ˈɛmptɔr/ and ‹caveat› were the same word – I assumed the latter was pronounced /kəˈvit/. I'm dating someone who's Sri Lankan (her parents grew up in Sri Lanka, but she grew up in the US), and she gets annoyed at /a/ in ‹Sri Lan...

Re: Conlang words that happen to resemble real words

Dnálori has a nominalizing ending for the experiencer of a state, "-twás/-twos/-tus", the last form of which is identical to a Latin ending forming past participles.

Re: Things you've slipped into a conlang?

One of my conlangs has the root "mxəl", meaning "to eat", after a friend of mine named Michael who is (in)famous among our friend group for his ability to quickly devour burritos and food in general.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

How powerful is analogy? If most, but not all, two-syllable verbs have stress on the last syllable, and most, but not all, two-syllable nouns have stress on the first syllable, would it be possible for words with the 'wrong' pattern to change to the other one, or for this stress shift to be producti...

Re: How do you organize a list of sound changes?

I have mine organized in a series of html tables, heavily inspired by http://steen.free.fr/wenedyk/gmp.html , Although I store the actual data in a much simpler text file, with a program I wrote for formatting it all prettily. That way, if I decide to change the formatting, I just have to change the...

Re: Phonoaesthetics

I absolutely love [θ], particularly in Spanish. I'm also a big fan of [ɬ], [ʎ], and [ç]. One of my conlangs had [çʷ], which is great, but not before [z̩], which the lang also had. Now that I think about it, I like [z̩] in theory, but in practice it's a pain.
