Re: Source for digital grammars
This website: FSI Language Courses is free, and it's more geared towards learning the languages than just grammar overviews, but it's a good resource, and it's free, lots of diversity.

Yeah, the problem is that textbooks are generally designed for people who likely don't have extensive/any knowledge of linguistic nomenclature. Agreed. This is a trait that is shared by the writers of Knowledge Bowl questions, which leads to me getting questions wrong when I answer with terms like ...

Well, before we did any kind of reading we did a lot of listening and speaking, and we wrote and practiced hiragana and katakana first (although we did start reading and writing before we got all the way through katakana). She avoided romaji as much as possible, she wanted us learning vocabulary in ...

My brain freaks out whenever I see ローマ字 because my Japanese teacher (a fiery red-headed white lady, funnily enough) has pounded it into my skull that ローマ字は駄目だぜ!(Emphasis my own)

Re: The Innovative Usage Thread
I had a friend the other day who used the plural of "acrostic" as "acrostixes", apparently as some kind of odd back-tracking from "matrix" :> "matrices". I thought it was a pretty interesting derivation, especially since it could be applied to "agnostic" :> "agnostixes", "bulimic" :> "bulimixes", "c...

A little more sharpening seems to reveal the last two letters are "G" and "K"
So "NO_R_GK" is what I make out.
EDIT: Maybe "BGK"?

I call it Chocolate-Vanilla ice cream. I try to avoid it, opting for plain vanilla instead. I have never heard anyone refer to at as a "Twisty" or the like.

It all started as I was driving cross-country with my cousin's fiance so we could get to their wedding, oh, and we were all Latino. *shrug*. Anyway, we're driving and in true rom-com fashion we start falling in love, despite the fact we were driving her to get married! Well, it's not as if I could h...

I dream about that a lot; the school always seems to be based off of my middle school, which was based off of a pod system, with the aesthetics of my current high school. Luckily, the sprawling architecture and poor building design made "getting lost" an acceptable excuse for not going to your class...

Ah, that's what I thought you meant. I meant the link to the original image. It's the word "original" above the picture; it's in bold, underlines itself when you mouse over it. Typical hyperlink behavior.
