Re: Creating dialects and language families

Thanks guys this was exactly what I was looking for. Cedh especially. @Vec - yeah you're right that conlangers tend towards phonological change. I too tend to lean in that direction and the whole point of this thread was to educate myself enough to create more interesting divisions in the grammar an...

Re: Creating dialects and language families

Educational and humbling though this has been, no one has addressed my question.

Are there any guides or resources on development of language families and dialects that could be followed as instructions or guidelines?

Re: Creating dialects and language families

Curse my thinking that was a linguistics term and I was coming off all knowledgeable! I seriously swear I've heard that in a linguistics capacity. I understood it to mean the distribution and variance of dialects within a language i.e. Maghreb, Iraqi, Egyptian etc. make up the Arabic substratum just...

Creating dialects and language families

Hello all, Most conlang language families I've seen have involved phonological change and orthographical variation and not much else i.e. protolang: ta: nekwi panki'i = 1) taa nipi pang'i 2) da neke: pagi'i 3) tha negwi fankiki Occasionally I've seen some grammar changes - perhaps nipakogolo became ...

How did we learn new languages from scratch?

It has always baffled me since young age and it only occurs to me now to ask this community: How in the world did people (travellers, missionaries etc.) learn compeltely new, completely unrelated langauges with which they had no prior contact and no-one who understands the foreigners' language? With...

the Old Nyata Langauge

The Old or Proto-Nyata Language or Nyataku dənyaytaya is the oldest ancestor of the southern languages group on the world of Maura - a giant floating island-continent - and a literary language of many southern kingdoms. It was spoken perhaps 3,000 years ago by the people of the great city-states of ...

Re: Obulamga: my first attempt at conlanging.

Much better than my first attempt. I think you're missing a trick with the no-allophones. For one you could have the velar g be an allophone of uvular G before close vowels and that would solve your pronunciation problem. Another thing is that it makes total sense for the laws of god-languages to ma...

Re: Spelling in your conlang

Well in-universe none of my languages would be written with any real-world alphabet but because writing word documents with a made-up font would be insanely tedious I tend to emphasise the difference between different branches of language families by having fun with spelling as well as phonology. In the Dwarfen kingdoms names often repeat - there are not that many unique names for your average dwarf - so many go by honorifics, patronymics, nicknames and so on. The famous Dwarfen warrior Kaþgan is better known to history as "Drúchðr Kúru" - the Short Warrior - for his stature (no, he wasn't s...
