I have rough coastlines; where to go next?
Okay, so I've come into a bit of a conundrum. I have rough shapes for my world's coastlines, but I don't know what to do next. I want to roughen up my coastlines a little before I continue, but so far, I've had little success in getting what I want. I'm considering just sticking with the coastlines ...

Re: SCA2 questions
Okay, I have a problem. I'm trying to make it so that a certain sound change applies only to syllables after the first, and only to lone vowels. However, I have tried two methods, and neither one works. My first method was this: 1/2/VC…_[C#] It works fairly well, but it tends to skip every other syl...

Re: The Great Proto-Indo-European Thread
So, I'm a little confused on PIE's secondary derivation and how it actually works. So, there's specific suffixes for secondary derivation when it comes to making verbs. How about nouns? And can the affixes used for primary derivation also be used for secondary derivation? And is there a good resourc...

Accent in daughter languages of my main protolanguage
So, I'm working on the main proto-language of my world. It's basically an ersatz of Proto-Indo-European, right down to spawning my world's biggest language family by number of speakers. Now, the daughter languages of PIE seem, at least to me, to have a wide variety of accent systems. You have Proto-...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
I hate to do this again, but it seems I forgot to ask for comments in my last post. I'd really like some, because this is probably what I'm going to go with for my map barring any serious problems that get pointed out.
So, have I made any errors with this map of my plate tectonics?

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
Okay, so I've added directions and speeds per year to my map. Here it is, complete with continents. http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb342/MysteryMan23100/Plate%20Tectonics%20Map.png Centi-whatevers are pretty close to centimeters; they're about a billionth of the distance between this planet's n...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
Okay, so I'm starting to think I made a clear error with plate G.
Did I make a mistake here, or could this actually happen? (And if so, how could it?)

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
I assume the subduction zones would be at any convergent boundary involving an oceanic plate? More or less, though it would technically be more correct to say that they involve convergent boundaries involving oceanic crust . Plates usually consist of both continental and oceanic crust in different ...

Re: A map of my tectonic plates!
@KathTheDragon: I should be able to give rather rough directions for the relative movements of these plates. As for relative speeds, I'm not really certain how to figure those out. Might be nice to have a general idea, though. @CatDoom: Okay, confession time. Believe it or not, I actually designed t...

Re: Geological History Draft
@Hydroeccentricity: Indigo? Really? I'd say it's more purple, but eh. In any case, I would say that on the west coast of the yellow continent and the east coast of the purple continent, you would indeed find subduction zones. I'm not 100% certain what the exact structure of the plate between those t...

Re: Geological History Draft
@Hydroeccentricity: Thanks for the compliment. I actually made a point of making sure my tectonic history occurred on a sphere, even though I needed a special program (which ended up being gplates) in order to get anywhere with that. I honestly think it's more likely that a new divergent plate bound...

Geological History Draft
Okay, so I've been working on my planet's geological history for a while, and I've come up with a rough draft of sorts. Now, I'm not certain if this is really what I want to go with; there may be major flaws I haven't spotted, and I really want to make sure I have a good foundation for my map before...

How do you organize a list of sound changes?
Okay, so you have a list of sound changes for your language, dating all the way to its earliest reconstructed ancestor which existed thousands of years ago. It's clear your language has a complex linguistic history, being in a subgroup of a subgroup of a subgroup, etc. of its overall language family...

Re: An update on my still-unnamed conworld (WIP)
@cromulant: I am aware, yes. And it is what I'm going for. The idea behind my "viewpoint" conculture is basically "take a Medieval European Fantasy land and have it evolve into a modern-day type of land." Of course, there will be plenty of decidedly non-Western cultures in this world. But for the me...

An update on my still-unnamed conworld (WIP)
Hey, everyone! I'm currently rethinking the geography of my conworld. I'm going for a much vaguer resemblance to our world this time. My current plan is to work off of a rough diagram of where the continents are, like so: http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb342/MysteryMan23100/betamap.png So, how ...

Re: My WIP Conworld, still unnamed
Hmm... The general reaction to this map makes me feel like I should re-do it from the start. The thing is, I don't quite know what will happen if I do. I already have ideas for this world based off this map, and I'm a little worried about what I'll have to change. On the other hand, I'm starting to ...

Re: My WIP Conworld, still unnamed
@michaelbusch: I'll admit, I would generally prefer to stay fairly within the bounds of "the rules that determine the structures and constrain the histories of real planets" (even though I also want to have dog, cat, bird and dragon people in my world alongside humans, but that's beside the point). ...

My WIP Conworld, still unnamed
Hey everyone! I've been working on a conworld for a while now, and I've come up with this basic map: http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb342/MysteryMan23100/WorldMapBaseOpaque.png Now, this is far from my final map. My next step is to make a map with better coastlines; you know, of the sort that a...

Re: Some comments about gen and SCA²
Erm...I'm not quite sure what you did, zompist, but gen no longer deletes letters when you leave the right side of the rewrite rule blank. This pretty much breaks the pseudo-Japanese example given by the guide. You might wish to look into that. Thanks.

Re: Programs for Drawing on a Sphere
@su_liam Thanks for pointing out GPlates for me. It's turning out to be pretty much what I wanted. The vector thing honestly isn't a problem, especially compared to how right this program is for what I want to do. Especially compared to Blender. :P Seriously though, Blender may be a powerful program...

Re: Programs for Drawing on a Sphere
@ Vardelm: I don't think you quite understood me. It's okay, it seems to happen a lot. :-D Right now, I only have, like, three shapes for my continents ready, and those are just the outlines of their shelves; I only have a vague idea of what parts I want to be above water. I started with the shelves...
