Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I'm trying to figure out how to get velarized consonant contrast in a daughter lang from what's essentially Latin with [tɬ], [θ], [kˀ] and a few other things thrown in. I was thinking maybe from long vowels (somehow?), but you'd all know better.

I'm trying to derive two languages from a common ancestor. There'll be two others to be worked out later as well. Any ideas for a rather open inventory? I'm thinking of [ᴚ] for some solutions. I dunno, they just always seem to do a lot of the typical evil empire things. I mean, has a ktuvok ever tried to talk with a human on the same level? Ever? Has a ktuvok ever been an international traveler? Maybe you should make a couple of those life-of-this guy bios for some non-humans. Assuming th...

Re: Is the technology of the Ktuvoks like the Iliu one?

Why do the ktuvoks seem to be Always Chaotic Evil? The only people who disagree are the Irreanists, but so far everything you've portrayed them doing confirms everyone else. For someone who wrote in the PCK that eeeevil villains are a hoary cliché, you're doing a good job of making the ktuvoks pure ...

Re: Most Important Natural Languages?

Let me get this straight. You're asking us to debate what an "important language" is, in a vacuum - i.e. without having answered "important for what?" - and therefore only a matter of individual prejudices about what's important to find important. How is this very different from asking which langua...

Re: Most Important Natural Languages?

Aramaic was surely important; it was the official language of the Persian Empire at a time when it contained 44% of Earth's population. It may have also been Jesus' language, but I'm not sure how relevant that really is. It's not like Muhammad and Arabic. Also Proto-World if it ever existed, which I...

Diplomat, ambassador krekunav Krekun means "to make diplomacy"*, and derives from prekun ("to argue") with the first consonant changed to reflect kru , meaning "peace" which in turn derives from kur ("good", but not in the strictly moral sense). My history's pretty boring compared to some of the stuff I've seen here. Half my family speaks English, the other half Farsi. My father tried to teach me Farsi when I was younger but it didn't work. However, I have vowed that Farsi will definitely be my third language (when I'm finished with Españo...
