Re: Sound Change Game

Since we've been swapping around the same four words for the past three months, I thought I'd post some new ones: English Ravine [ɹə.ˈvin] → Acadian Raviń [ˈɾɐ.vĩ] English Bowers Spring [ˈbaʊ.ɚz spɹɪŋ] → Acadian Báavarzaspreń [ˈba.ɐ.ˌvɐɾ.zɐs.ˌpɾɛ̃] English Oak Hill [oʊk hɪl] → Acadian Waćeu [ˈwɐ.tʃɛ...

Basically people in and around Boston stopped dropping/r/ from syllable codas as the dialects of New England blended together.

Re: Predict the future of your dialect

Well the earliest changes were taken from changes already affecting the dialect (such as the NCVS and the Canadian Shift). Later changes (such as the Newfoundland Merger and vowel breaking) are currently affecting nearby dialects of English, and spread to Acadian by mid-millennium. The last few chan...

Predict the future of your dialect

So I'm curious as to the future of languages around the world and how they will change and evolve. And that was the inspiration for my conlang Acadian, which is a projection of my level New England dialect one thousand years into the future. So what I would like to see is what you think will happen ...

Re: The 200,000 Year English Project

Well I decided on 200,000 years since that would give us a good number of millennium-long increments to have our fun, and also because I'd just recently watched the Doctor Who episodes that took place on Satellite Five, 200,000 years in the future. So the date was stuck in my mind.

Re: The 200,000 Year English Project

Of course in 6000 years or so it'll be almost impossible to see many similarities to modern English, if any. But what might it sound like? Re: The 200,000 Year English Project

I'm starting from a New England dialect. All the mergers I've put in are listed in the sound shift list. We've got the NCVS (but only before nasals), Canadian raising and the Canadian Shift, as well as the Newfoundland Merger later on. But that's all in the first step. What sound shifts will affect ...

The 200,000 Year English Project

So, as we all know, languages change over time. That's probably the most obvious statement in linguistics, but how much they change can vary. Some, like Spanish, change slowly, while others like English change more rapidly and diverge. And while over the span of years and decades it might not sound ...

It was preserved as a standard using pictures and written glosses. The teaching of ASL is heavily structured and formalised, and users of it are very careful not to introduce changes and colloquial signs into translations, since others wouldn't be able to understand. Of course, the deaf of this time...
