Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way
在我的中文课我们学普通话,可是我们的老师只说“中文”,不说“普通话”。我妈妈说广东话。我的大学有广东话课,但是学广东话以前我先得上四门普通话课,所以我现在学普通话。 Zài wǒ de Zhōngwén kè wǒmen xué Pǔtōnghuà, kěshì wǒmen de lǎoshī zhǐ shuō "Zhōngwén", bù shuō "Pǔtōnghuà". Re: How does dominant-recessive vowel harmony arise?
Isn't this the kind of system that's arisen in some varieties of Andalusian Spanish ? Interesting... thanks for that. I may end up using that. I'm not sure I believe in height based harmony.... It seems to be mentioned in early linguistic literature, but looking at the same languages being describe...

How does dominant-recessive vowel harmony arise?
I'm trying to make a conlang with dominant-recessive vowel harmony. The problem is, I don't want to create it ex-nihilo, but I can't find information on how dominant-recessive vowel harmony systems arise, whether the harmonising feature is [±ATR] or height (the two types of dominant-recessive harmon...

Re: May have vs. might have
Vancouverite here. There are three senses of "You might have broken the vase" that I can immediately think of: 1. Your actions endangered the vase but didn't break it. 2. I suggest that breaking the vase was a good idea (c.f. "You might have handled that more delicately.") 3. It's possible that the ...

I sadly don't know enough about this topic to help you with figuring out a thermohaline circulation and similar interesting things but i hope this was helpful. It was, thanks! Currents on a planet with equatorial ocean
I've made a planet with an ocean that wraps around the equator, and I'm not sure what the consequences for this are.
Here's the map:
I have very little knowledge on how ocean currents work, so I don't know how they would behave in this situation. Any advice?

That combined with turning the th-sounds into /d/ in many dialects makes me think English is finally turning into other W. Germanic languages. Has anybody encountered a native English speaker who has st > s / _#? E.g. My cousin consistently says [tʰejsɨz] for "tastes" (meaning that "taste" is for him underlyingly /tejs/; c.f. [kɪsɨz] "kisses"), and [fɪs] for "fist". He is also a native speaker of Cantonese, as are his sisters, but they do ...

This has been sitting in a tab on my notepad for a few days while I've tinkered with it. I have a vague idea that the speakers are desert nomads living on the fringes of a major empire. This is very much embryonic, and I'm not taking it too seriously, so a lot of the ideas half-formed at best. i u e...
