Re: Alpic

Well, I mean, we have a pretty thorough understanding of what the biology and geography of the region were like, and we know in broad strokes what kinds of technology were being used in the area. That's a lot of stuff you wouldn't have to make up. :P

Re: Small vowel inventories in North America

Not sure what you mean; the table for Hupa Vowel Phonemes lists "ɪ ~ e", and notes that all of the vowels can be short or long. In any event, my statements were mostly based on notes I took a while back from Victor Golla's California Indian Languages , rather than on the Wikipedia articles I linked ...

Re: Small vowel inventories in North America

Other systems with more back than front vowels include Valley Yokuts I'm pretty sure /a/ in Valley Yokuts is a front vowel, though it would naturally be more central than /i/, so the system is actually very symmetrical. Considering that /uː/ is not usually phonetically distinguished from /ɔː/, you ...

For me, a lot of linguistics terms: "velar" /ˈvɛlɚ/, "alveolar" /alviˈoʊlɚ/... That's not how those are pronounced? >_> I always make a mess of "palatalization" for some reason; I can't say I even have a standard pronunciation, because I usually say it one way and then correct myself, and then give...

Does anybody have a backup of Iŋomœ́? The grammar wasn't on the Wiki and it appears that the page it was on went down recently. In retrospect, I've looked at it enough (since one of my languages is a granddaughter) that I really should have saved a backup myself. >_<

I was recently watching an episode of Making a Murderer , a documentary series chronicling events that took place in a rural part of Wisconsin, and one individual who was interviewed used the word "supposably" several times in place of "supposedly." I had heard a joke about this phenomenon once, but...

I'm about as monolingual as anybody, but in terms of languages I studied in school, Spanish is the one I dedicated the most effort to, since it's a pretty practical language to learn here in California. I'm probably not the first to have asked this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any precedent for vowel nasalization changing into some other vowel-marking of syllable-level feature, like tone or phonation. I know I've seen this in some conlangs, but are there any real-world cases where this is...

If the ʔụk thing bothers you so much, why not consider cultures which consider men to have something in them which makes them more human / partly divine / otherwise superior to women. I mean it's usually just semen, but ʔụk did instantly remind me of that. And look at how it's considered in-culture...

Matrix, that's a lot of neat ideas! I'm curious, though; is Maikros a setting where magic is clearly and verifiably real? And if so, are the gods actual individuals that a person could potentially meet and interact with? The way you write about the Sublime Goddess, it sounds like she's actually some...
