Temporal semantics, e.g. "last time"

(Tried to search, not sure how to get results.) I want to try "generating" a proto-language from some primitive idioms, and I want those idioms to be derived from the cultural ontology of the speakers. More specifically, I'm wondering how temporal semantics get affected by cosmological views. I've h...

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Minä olen Suomessa. Mikä nyt? I am in Finland. What now? Sauf! Juo. Drink. Jak będzie "masło szałwiowe" po Tlingitsku? Hoe zeg je "salieboter" in Tlingit? How does one say "sage butter" in Tlingit?

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Re: Help your fluency in a nifty way

Can I join in? I want to learn to speak better Finnish, and this looks like a way I can figure out what I still don't know.

Re: Sound Change Quickie Thread

I want to make a daughter language to Proto-Germanic, and I want to do something with the labiovelars. Is it plausible to have them become palatals along the lines of kʷ > t͡ʃ, gʷ > d͡ʒ, xʷ > ʃ ?

Could I have Vn > Ṽə word-finally? I have a three-vowel system I want to expand and a lot of word-final nasals.

Re: Attempt at an isolating language

Hurrah, attention. Sure, I'll elaborate on the copula. I'll have a verb "to exist" which can address the two existential cases. sran ki ox exist "Oxen exist." qun sran ki hli DIST:A ox exist NEG "That ox (that you're thinking of) doesn't exist." For the locative cases, I'll use a locative particle t...

Attempt at an isolating language

Tentatively named Qan Hlais ("this speak"). Well, I am going to need more than a few naming languages for a roleplaying setting I've adopted as a forever-work-in-progress, and I'd like some names to have a sort of SE Asian feel to them. Naturally, I'm now battling verbs in a language explicitly crea...

Proto-Dravidian Resources?

Hello, I've been interested in Proto-Dravidian and the development of its daughter languages, but I can't seem to find anything about the reconstructed language. Clearly work has been done in the area, but Google has failed me in finding any free resources. Specifically, I'd like a list of etyma and...
