Re: On the order of the loss of personal verbal inflections

in English the 3rd person singular is the only one (outside of be ) with any distinctive marking (in the present, at least). According to this http://typo.uni-konstanz.de/rara/nav/browse.php?number=34 that is extremely rare, with English as the only given example. http://typo.uni-konstanz.de/archiv...

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread

One lang of mine, Ainure, has adpositions that agree with their dependents in number and case. Sometimes this works just like Celtic's inflected prepositions, but the inflection is still obligatory when the object of the adposition is separately specified, which fits well with Ainure's obviative "fo...

Re: The dream thread

A pretty frequent theme in my dreams: I am trying to do a very simple task but it takes an absurdly long time. For instance, I dreamt I was trying to make a sandwich, but every time I looked away it would "reset" to an earlier stage and I'd have to re-do steps (often thinking things like "Didn't I p...

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread

This feature is totally unnatural. But anyway... syntax based aspect (or tense) encoding. So, this language has fixed word order except that the verbs can be positioned anywhere in the sentence depending on the aspect. So for example you can have: drink puppy.NOM milk.ACC > puppy haven't drunk milk...

buh? I can understand annoyance at my verbosity/getting bogged down in phonology I guess, but if you see "bashing" in my posts then you're just reading into them something that isn't there. If it were Ahzoh complaining I'd take it more seriously but given that he followed some of my suggestions re: ...

Re: YHXKK VŘḴHẔY (Yaxkik Vřḵaẕī) scratchpad

I don't know how to pronounce many of these sounds, and If I can't pronounce them, then why would I add them? I think the opposite way: why would I ever handicap my conlanging by only using sounds I can personally pronounce? Learning to produce foreign sounds just takes practice... lots of practice...

Re: YHXKK VŘḴHẔY (Yaxkik Vřḵaẕī) scratchpad

Well, diachronics isn't my own strong suit but you've defnitely got room for a lot more difference between Verkhazhii and Arkhean's unpalatalized consonants. -You could say that Arkhean's voiceless fricatives stem from earlier aspirated stops, and the voiced fricatives used to be intervocal allophon...

Re: YHXKK VŘḴHẔY (Yaxkik Vřḵaẕī) scratchpad

This is a rough-draft, I have not gotten that far yet, this is only the begginning, as I say up top, I thought a scratchpad was a like a "note-to-self" to post ones progress. Well sure, but what I mean is, rough-draft or not, conscript and in-world alphabet just aren't really a good place to start,...

Re: YHXKK VŘḴHẔY (Yaxkik Vřḵaẕī) scratchpad

Regarding the content: -Your consonant inventory is pretty English-reminiscent, exotic (and honestly, very random-seeming) additions notwithstanding -Your Romanization uses diacritics rather haphazardly, for instance <č> without <c> -It seems you are aiming for an abjad, but why did you use <H> in t...

Re: The Miniature Conlangs Thread

This is a great idea for a thread. I like making phonologies as much as the next conlanger but all my long-term projects are sustained by grammar that interests me. With Classical Prakyũ, I am exploring Suffixaufnahme , except I'm trying to extend it into a productive system of affix absorption and ...

Re: Are palatals coronal or dorsal?

I'm under the impression that it's just an imprecise term, an archi-POA if you will, that is applied to several different phonetic realizations which may be further specified if necessary. That said, if someone is using the term in a more narrow, phonetic sense (e.g., treating "palatal" and "alveolo...

Re: Is This Grammatical To You?

It almost sounds like someone was going to say "at random" and then decided to put the qualifiers in at the last second. "...at—seemingly, just... complete random" or something like that. So, I'd say it's grammatical but I'd only expect it to crop up in unrehearsed conversation. In writing I'd revis...
